Must sell, but what would be a good price? (Read 744 times)

Due to financial issues and other things going on I'm sadly forced to sell the beast I built a couple years ago, but not sure what a good starting price would be.  I know what I have wrapped up in this rig but its been just long enough there's no way to construct one exactly like it to see what it might go for these days Undecided

Intel Core 2 Duo 3.0 GHz, 1333 MHz FSB, E6850 CPU.
2 GB OCZ PC8500 (1066 MHz) DDR2 RAM.
1 GB PCI-E GeForce 8800GT GDDR3 Graphics Card With DirectX 10.
Gigabyte S-Series GA-EP45-DS3L/S3L Motherboard.
160 GB SATA 3.0GB Hard Drive.
430W Thermaltake PSU.
Sony DVD/CD Burner.
Windows Vista Home Basic 64-Bit.
20" Acer LCD Widescreen Monitor.

Would really like to get about $1000 out of it at least...that's about half of what I actually spent.  But I have no idea, must have a computer due to online classes I'm taking but at this point I found a nice laptop for $500.  Would mean no more FS till I get back on my feet again but at this point I see no other option.  Just don't want sell to cheap because of the money I put into the rig, but at the same time don't want to list a price that is to high and never get a bite. Undecided

A good way to determine a starting price, would be to look online and see what it would cost today to buy all of the components(or the next closest thing to those that are unavailable), and then subtract 25%-40% for the two years of time you've been running it.

I used to be really proud of my setup, and what I had in it money wise, until I went to Walmart one day, and saw that you can now buy laptops with better specs, at a much cheaper price.  Embarrassed
What cost me near $1000 to build 3 years ago, can be done today for just under $500, minus the time I've spent running it, and I'd be lucky to get $200-$300 for my whole system.

Top of the line one day, run of the mill junk the next.

Best advice, start at just above the price of the laptop you want, and hope like hell you get it, but settle for no less than the laptop's price.  If you can't get that for it, it's not worth selling.  Wink

I think $1000 is a little too much. I can buy a new pc with better specs than yours for around 800-900 Euro. If I would build it myself, even cheaper. Take Shane's advice and settle for just above what you need for the laptop.

Good luck with the sale,

Carlo Wink

Found all the old invoices from when it was built, some parts are a little newer then others due to upgrade/replacement.  Grand total for the tower itself as it currently stands...$1617.63 at retail prices of the parts when ordered...similar setup brand new in today's prices is about $900 give or take a little as I only used one site for the search.  Monitor was $233.26 new and similar replacement today is about $140.  Be it mines used, but well maintained, might try for $800 OBO.  Hard to tell what the market is like, hate to go too cheap, main point for selling is to not only afford a laptop to fit my current needs, but to have at least a couple hundred extra to pay a couple bills.  Oh well, figured I would run it by and see what the odds were. Roll Eyes  Figure if I can't get more out of it then the price of the laptop no point in selling.  Laptop would be nice for portable reasons but at the same time why loose the power of this rig just to gain that little feature Tongue

Pricing a new rig similar to it isn't too easy as every part currently in it is no longer available through the main retailers like Newegg/Tigerdirect, power supply is the only thing that can still get an identical match for Tongue

Hate how technology changes so incredibly fast.  I remember my first computer, an old IBM 166mghz with 16mb ram...and a built in CD-ROM Shocked  Some $1500 back then...we had the POWER package Grin  Still works, but probably get about $10 out of it if lucky, unfortunately computers don't seem to have an antique value Roll Eyes

Intel Core 2 Duo 3.0 GHz, 1333 MHz FSB, E6850 CPU.

Core 2 Quad Q6600s go for about $150 AUD used. E6850 is pretty much exactly half a Q6600 hence I'm going to say $75 AUD.

Quote:
2 GB OCZ PC8500 (1066 MHz) DDR2 RAM.

Going rate is maybe $55 AUD. I bought 2GB of DDR2-800 for $50 AUD a few months ago...

Quote:
1 GB PCI-E GeForce 8800GT GDDR3 Graphics Card With DirectX 10.

Sold mine for $50 AUD.

Quote:
Gigabyte S-Series GA-EP45-DS3L/S3L Motherboard.

Not many people need these since socket 775 is old and has been replaced by i7. $50 AUD

Quote:
160 GB SATA 3.0GB Hard Drive.

Low capacity, probably very old. I bought a brand new 1TB drive for $63 AUD. $10 AUD

Quote:
430W Thermaltake PSU.

Thermaltake, 430 watt.... $20 AUD

Quote:
Sony DVD/CD Burner.

$50 AUD new I think. So maybe $15 AUD used.

Quote:
Windows Vista Home Basic 64-Bit.

$50 AUD

Quote:
20" Acer LCD Widescreen Monitor.

Sold my old 19" for $40 AUD. I'm going to say $70 AUD since it's widescreen and 20" and presumably in good condition.

Grand total: $395 AUD. 1 AUD = 1 USD now, but since everything is much more expensive in Australia anyway and you're in the US, I think you'll be able to sell the entire thing for $350 USD. Prices are from an overclocking forum in australia where people sell, buy and trade used hardware and also are based off what I've sold and bought used hardware for. If you sell to someone who doesn't know much about computers you might be able to get a bit more, maybe $400-450. No promises though.

Try 450 first, then 400, then 350.

It's not a bad PC, but PC hardware moves really fast.
