I'm a big fan of using the computer for entertainment, always have been. Been playing versions of flight sim on and off for years. I used to play FS9 on a laptop, found the performance sucked, and wasn't all that into. It so happened I bought a new "powerful" desktop computer on sale at Best Buy, around the time that FSX was coming out. Boy was I surprised. It was terrible. But I found FS9 ran great, and to make up for the disappointment, I went out and bought my first Payware aircraft: A plane by PMDG. It so overwhelmed me that such things were possible. I had never seen anything so cool. Needless to say I became hooked, other games faded into the background. It also made me a malcontent. the list of Payware planes that I consider "worthy" can be counted on one hand. Obviously, as time passed, I upgraded computers, bought more and more payware, and it became a genuine "hobby".
But now, I'm losing interest fast. I'm sick of dealing with constant tweaking, planes that fall short of expectations, jerky developers that don't listen to their customers and constantly release planes that I've never even heard of, and finally, I just don't know where to go with it. I remember feeling so proud the first time I landed a jet in FS9 and watched it in Instant Replay (the landing sucked, but it was a landing).
So now I have a biggy computer with yoke and throttles, pretty much totally dedicated to FSX. I've become so bored with it all that I was seriously considering "Farm Simulator".
I would hate to leave a gaming computer like the one I have just sit in the corner gathering dust, and eventually becoming obsolete. The trouble is, I can't even imagine anymore what kind of other games I would even be interested in. I abhor the stupid shootemups, not much into fantasy role-playing, and just can't wrap myself around the idea of playing yet another incarnation of Civilization. Any suggestions? I guess maybe I'm just getting too old for Video Games.
Since its a lazy Sunday Morning, Halloween, I was just putting this out for a boring discussion, since there isn't much else going on.
Anybody feel the same?

...funny thing is...
I've been watching all your posts in the FSX Forum and the Hardware Forum, since FSX was released, and the never-ending arguments with various (similarly inclined) Members involving a multitude of problems with both FSX and Hardware,
.....and I always thought to myself; "You are not enjoying this"...
...
..you should be having fun flying around with FS 2002/FS 2004 like the rest of us!
I purchased FSX when it was first released and soon found out that my ancient Computer was no good to run it nicely, so I saved myself loads of money and infinite stress, and stuck to FS 2004....which runs lovely...
...!
I find more enjoyment in actually flying my FS 2004 every day, rather than daily worrying about the size of my Processor, Graphics Card, and Power Supply Unit!
I am limited to what I can do, with what I have...
..and I am satisfied with that!...

Yeah, I considered going back to FS9 several times, and I used to have both of them side by side. As it is, I get pretty decent performance now, at a premium cost of course. Was it worth it? No, probably not.

I don't fly the sim as much as I used to, but still once or twice a week I take off for a flight. I'm saving my pennies for another lcd screen believing more imersion will spark my interest. Untill I went to dinner at my future son in laws house last night and saw his 10 foot projection screen in action. Now I've been busy looking up screens and projecters all morning on the net. A waste of time of course because my computer room is only 8 feet across! And stuffed to the top with parts, old battery chargers etc.
To date I have never bought a payware craft yet.
Flying with twins is a lot of fun..

That probably isn't a bad thing. You get on what is called, I think
the hedonistic treadmill
where nothing is ever good enough. Can't speak for others, but you get one plane like the Stratocruiser and suddenly you don't want to fly the CalClassics anymore. And then it starts bothering you that they didn't include the Secondary Air Conditioning circuit breaker...

...the funny thing is...
...in my retirement I have enjoyed flying my FS'98/2000/2002/2004/(FSX?) Sims every single day for the past 12+ years...
..!
I have crates of various Computer Games, (and Computers), dating from the late 1970's but the Flight Sim series is the only one that allows me to explore the whole World, in conjunction with my Maps and local information via Wikipedia!
Very entertaining and educational!
I am drawn to my trusty Flight Sim upon waking up every morning, and there I remain for the next 12 hours....
...how's that for addiction!....

I've always been more interested in the development side of FS than actually "flying". Creating addons rather than buying them might help relieve your boredom. Perhaps that's not what you had in mind. It doesn't suit everyone but can be very addictive.

Do as I did ,Make your Own airplanes ,and you will leave the flying which is just a bunches of 00110001111 110000111100010110..endless..nothing more
I think you are letting this all MSFS become part of your life and that's when It becomes a life and death issue, you need to find another hobbies besides flying a Computer Game ,because this is what it is
A Game
and nothing more ,you must enjoy as what it is ,and don't make it part of your life .There is design with the FSX-SDK of FS9-SDK there are many other games, but above all I'll give you the best GAME of all, Turn off that PC and go nearest airport and watch real airplanes ,meet people ,meet girls , I'm telling you this because you are the same ME a year ago , by reading you I realize I was watching myself , For frustration with these GAMES I have left this forum 3 times ,with anger , the truth is this is not the life.
Speaking of witch ,and I got a bad news for you buddy, there's a new MSFS coming and it seems to be worse and many will require much more expensive hardware ,besides my days of developing are ending because of this "Flight" which It also seems we have to paid to Microsoft for every airplane we made.
I made airplanes for free , since 2004 and I being a longer time than you since FS98 came out.
Yes also Bought the PMDG 747-400 and I also think is the best and most realistic plane ever done (is like you are flying a real 747)
Sorry to be honest ,my apologies if this is not your case, but your post really touch me ,and what I'm trying to wake you up man ,there is a beutiful GAME outside your door ,sometimes its creepy ugly ,sometimes is nice and cool ,that depends of how good you play in that game .
BTW: I about to release for free My hardest work of all my twelve release and md 83 , I think is better than many Paywares ,People will criticize , people will insult me as usual , I'm preparing my self to the Normal No feedback of negative feedback when you not charge anything and give your precious work of months for free ,but I see what is the important, I made it ..

Alrot,
I liked how you took the liberty of BOLD facing that. LOL.
I stuck that sentence in there, not quite sure if anybody would zero in on it! I was actually referring only to some Payware developers, definitely not Freeware developers. Sorry I didn't make that distinction.
I've played around with some "development" in the past. I put it in quotes because it was more stuff like learning how to compile objects and place them in the sim, do rudimentary modifications to runways etc, for the purpose of entirely static digital Dioramas. I used to mess around with 3D design using Blender. The only 3d object of mine that ever made it into the sim was, get this, a mobile Passenger Stair! (not terribly exciting, I know). And then I got online and saw some of the magnificent stuff that you were creating, and it made me feel like I was kind of silly!
I've made some Flight Sim movies that I thought were quite good. One time I showed some of them to some dinner guests, thinking they would find them entertaining. Instead, they stood there, looking bored, and after making some polite comments, went back to their drinks in the kitchen!
I hear what you are saying. You might be the first person who has ever told me to
get a life
, in a positive, constructive way!

I've recently gone over to the Dark Side, I've brought X-Plane 9. The graphics aren't as good as FSX but the game play is incredibly realistic and suddenly I'm focusing on sharpening my skills on a variety of planes and being an aerobatic God in as close to realistic settings as possible.
Remember I'm a nutter.... scary or what?
