RIP Jimi. You were special.

So was his. Have another look at Webb's photo. Here's a close-up. http://heroesandlegendsltd.co.uk/images/0018%20Jimi%20Hendrix.jpg

I think this would be more appropriate in the Music forum. Tongue

..I think he actually played it; "Left-handed" which I find it impossible to do!... Shocked...!
Paul McCartney played a "Left-handed" Bass Guitar?

Paul...Hammond B3 + Leslie 760/770.... Cool...!

If you're naturally right handed I wouldn't expect you to be able to play left-handed. Jimi Hendrix was left-handed. If you look closely it's a standard right-handed Strat apart from being strung the other way up. Left-handed guitars might not have been so easy to get hold of then as they are now. I believe he could also play other people's standard guitars upside-down. Not sure how well as this would mean changing the fingering.

There's always an exception to the rule. Marl Knopfler is actually left-handed but he plays a standard right-handed guitar in the conventional way. He reckons to do things with his left hand that most guitarists couldn't.

PS. Paul McCartney uses a proper left-handed bass guitar. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/H%C3%B6fner

Hendrix flipped the Strat and restrung it accordingly.  In Webb's photo, you can clearly see the thicker (bass strings) physically up, that's the proper way for righties also.

Dick Dale, however, flipped his Strat but did not restring it.

Dick Dale:  dubbed the "King of the Surf Guitar".  His playing was pretty interesting, partially on account of his completely backwards guitar.   Definitely surf music, but I'd say a bit ahead of his time (1962-1963) or so.

When we were house band at the Vapors in Biloxi in the late sixties, we got to know another group that was house band at the Fiesta just a short distance down the road. We got through at 1:00 and they played until 2:00, sometimes later. Sometimes we would go listen to them play their last set. The guitar player played a right handed guitar, upside down, but not restrung. One night they came off stage and sat down with us and I just had to ask. When I said, "Pete, I have a question." he died laughing, as he knew what was coming. He said when he was learning to play he did not have a guitar and was constantly borrowing one from some one. Of course they were all right handed and the owners did not want him to restring it. So he learned to play that way. He was very, very good but those were the weirdest looking chords I've ever seen.  Grin
