I really like flying the default 737-800 in FSX, so after reading so much about how awesome POSKY planes were, I decided to download their 737-900. I couldn't figure out for the life of me how to do it from their website (*edit: let me rephrase this; I was able to download a whole bunch of stuff, but installing was another story. It seems you have to download and install file A, then update it for FSX, then download and install file B, etc. etc. Why they can't just say DOWNLOAD THIS, THEN THIS to make it clear is beyond me. The instructions are supposedly in the FAQ section on their forum, which I was unable to find. They couldn't make it harder to download and install their aircraft if they tried Angry), which is a whole other story, but I finally was able to download one with several textures from Simviation. So I loaded 'er up and took off and...  Undecided

I'm really not so sure what's supposedly so cool about their version vs. the default FSX plane. First of all, there is no VC, which I find patently absurd (although the one I downloaded included a VC someone apparently made), but really, I just didn't find it any cooler at all.

Am I missing something? Thoughts?

I'm not usually a tube driver, but I think the main thing is variety.  Many comercial aircraft with lots and tots of textures.

YES,I admit that to download a model is a bit complicated , and many doesn't like to download from their site just because of their complexity ..

these darn computer guys, they sometime fly so above us, mortals. i understand your frustration. you see some beautiful screenshots and say to yourself, hey that plane look cool, i would like to give it a shot. you download it and when ready to install, suddenly, it's chinese. no offense to our chineses friends. i have a rule. very simple. i read the read me faqs and if i don't understand it, i flush the file. why should i bother myself when there is so many, fine and easy to install models, out there. i have admiration for these guys who give time and energy creating free models for us to use, but yes sometimes they forget that we're just regular joes, without computer knowledge.

i agree the website layout is about as confusing as it gets, and an almost angry response if anyone dares to suggest so from the project opensky admins.

i have little doubt they dont care or want new users, the whole tone is that posky is for an elite clique of simmers who over the years know all the tips an tricks for a simple download process.

if you can't find the way through the riddle newbies...tough luck go elsewhere is the message given out from posky, because you have not contributed to the project and wouldnt appreciate the finer points of it either.

i know of no other website like it

My opinion on Posky is this: Their jets don't fly well. The models aren't made well. They have terrible support. (rude people on their forums...never go to them!!!) They say the spend so much time working on making the flight dynamics real and accurate. Personally, I think they absolutely fail at this. You can't even takeoff by the end of the runway in their 747-8F. A friend completely overhauled the flight dynamics for our VA, and the jet flies really well now.

I say, Posky is not the #1 place to look for quality airliner add-ons.

Cool

OK folks....... please keep in mind that the concept of FREEWARE is a pretty darn unique thing.  As people keep biting the hand that feeds them, eventually the people with the food get pretty tired of producing the food.  And I couldn't blame them.

Also, those that might consider getting their feet wet in producing such products see the volume of negative abuse that starts to appear.... and say to themselves "Why risk all that garbage?"

It is one thing to say "I really have trouble installing this one".  It is another to say "these guys do a terrible job of making this easy to install".  In one case you are commuincation thhat the install is "above" you...and the issue is yours.  The other is pointing the finger at them and making it seem like they OWE you something.

They don't.

No one is forcing you to use addons.  No one is forcing you to use a particular add on.

These people are making this stuff FOR FREE.  FREE!!!!  Hours and hours and hours of work.  FREE!  A labor of love.  If they decide that their method of installing is adequate to their intents,......... it is their decision to do that.  If they decide that their flight dynamics are acceptable for them.... that too is their decision.  If they like their paints... that too is their decision to make.

So please keep this in mind as you phrase your discussions.  You can certainly express opinions... but try to do it in a constructive manner, not a destructive way.  Thanks.

best,

.................john

Well, instead of complaining about people who put their own free time and money into creating these FREE products for you to use, just don't download them.  You actually have that choice.

And if you do download it, and use it, and enjoy it, give them 30 seconds of your time and thank them.   Smiley

I'm not saying their aircraft aren't any good - after all, in order to know I'd have to be able to download and install them reasonably easily! As it is I - a former computer administrator, i.e. not computer illiterate - can't figure out how to download a simple plane and install the damn thing. If someone could explain to me like a 5 year old how their system works - i.e. what do I download first, what (if anything) needs to be modified for FSX use, and what to download thereafter - I'd be delighted. As it is, they have base packages, then model packages, read_me files that say do this, then download that, then modify this... give me a break. Give it to me a, b, c.

Anyway, I'd love to be able to just download and install the damn things and post a nice thank you on their forums, but alas, I can't figure out how to.  Undecided

I understand your frustration, some aircraft aren't bundled the same way as others.  A lot of designers bundle it all into one folder that you download and drop into your airplanes folder.  Others require a little more thought and time I guess you could say.

I'll admit that I don't often take on the challenge of installing aircraft if it isn't a drag and drop folder.  I'm no computer whiz either and I prefer my instructions drawn with crayons too, so it has to be a pretty good airplane for me to take the time and effort.  But that's just me.  Other users may find this easy for them.

The developer isn't losing any money if we don't download their product, so often times we just have to deal with how they distribute their products and either learn their ways, or find a similar add-on from a different developer.

To say thanks to a developer, a lot of them leave their email address in the read_me file.   Wink

We also have a designer feedback forum here at SimV - http://205.252.250.26/cgi-bin/yabb2/YaBB.pl?board=designfeedback

Look at the stickies and the tutorial sections of this forum.  There are references that explain the workings of installing add ons.

As to the wanting just a "plug-and-play" type of thing...... that is something that you almost always get in payware addons.

With freeware you DO have to sometimes "pay" something.  That payment is often learning how to install them.  And yes,........ it CAN get complicated.

best,

Besides Simviation, Posky was my first introduction to aircraft other then what came with default FS9 and later FSX. I was impressed with all the different models and skins so at the time Posky was one of my favorite sites and aircraft. Then i discovered payware yet i still have a couple of Posky jets in my hanger.

The Posky 737NG is the easiest plane to download, configure and install in fsx.  You really only need to download the fsx model package of your choosing such as no eyebrow with winlets etc.  Then find a base package amongst the choices listed that fits the model package.

The sound package is a nice addition or search the typical web sites for an alternative sound package.

Use the link below to set up the VC.  Same concept works for the 744 and CRJ.

I'm going to use this opportunity.
If this kind of things happens to IMHO to one of the biggest Giants in Freeware design ,what should I expect for myself ? and the others who are learning how to make them..

I remember the times of fs2002/2004 there were like 50 new models all freeware everyday, today its all about paywares,Few ones dedicate this to the love of art

I just would like to add Again with all do respect to all, that to me this is a lesson a teaching thread , a friend told me these words
for every 1000 people that love your work - 0 will tell you. Don't look for feedback

and by watching how Opensky its being fusilladed here  expect for the worse, bad comments, complaining ,unfair situations

I wasn't suppose to never make a freeware ,to sit and work, due to things as this thread which I respect others opinion but not share them  ,but I find out ,Is what I love ,I really enjoy making these airplanes ,I never fly in them ,But I really enjoy and love making them.

Be aware that making these things is very though ,is not as easy at it looks ,Do Not credit them,Do not give them feedback,do not applause them if you don't want ,but please don't not criticize it ,and worse In Public ,accept it as a gift,You don't like it ,Delete it,and look for other one ,if you find it ..
