ATI Catalyst Control Center missing in latest update? (Read 729 times)

I’ve noticed that the latest ATI Video Drivers no longer come as a large package (75MB) which includes the ATI Catalyst Control Center. I know that the smaller package is just the drivers (usually 46MB).

The latest update says the CCC is included:

http://sites.amd.com/us/game/downloads/Pages/radeon-xp-32.aspx
http://www.filehippo.com/download_ati_catalyst_xp/

How can the CCC be included if the latest driver package is 46MB?

When I update the latest package the ATI icon does not appear in the task manager. Under Program Files: ATI Technologies there is no ATI Catalyst Control Center folder. Also, the last reboot has the hardware wizard pop up again. For whatever reason I choose to cancel it. If that was a mistake I would like to know.

How I update my drivers:

1. Remove ATI driver from add/remove programs then remove the control panel from the add/remove programs.

2. Reboot into safe mode (F8) during boot up.

3. On reboot into safe mode WinXP will auto detect and install drivers. Just let it do its thing. Cancel out auto-install hardware wizard.

4. Navigate to device manger ->display adapter ->uninstall and/or remove ATI display adapter but do not reboot.

5. Remove ATI Folders: C:ATI and Program Files: ATI Technologies.

6. Disable AntiVirus software (usually don’t see this as I’m in safe mode).

7. Run Driver Sweeper

8. Empty recycle bin even if looks empty.

9. Run Registry Mechanic

10. Reboot.

11. Install the new drivers and control panel.

12. Reboot.

After a few seconds, the ATI icon will appear in the task bar.

Has anyone else who uses ATI video cards had any problem with their updates (not getting the CCC)?

Thought I found an answer as I'm not the only one having the problem:

http://forums.amd.com/game/messageview.cfm?catid=279&threadid=138702

Scroll down to "found an answer".

It worked for him, but not for me and some others who tried it.

One thing I did clear up is the hardward wizards that pop up after step 12. It's looking for the display adapters so I reloaded them with the disc.

I believe I solved the problem to my satisfaction.

While researching, there seem to be some debate on Driver Sweeper and Driver Cleaner Pro. Looks like I used DCP in the past and the instructions I listed above are the ones listed in the readme.txt Grin

Tried DCP but the CCC still wouldn't load. I then loaded ATI Tray Tools and found what I needed: Antialising, Anisotropic Filtering, Mipmap Detail Level, etc, etc.
