currently I run a core 2 duo E8500, unsure whether to upgrade to a core 2 quad Q6600. I dont want any "you should buy these" kind of answers, just responses to this particular hardware setup.
 

Core 2 Duo E8500 3gb, Gigabyte S-Series mainboard, Sapphire HD5870 Vapor X  1gb GRaphics card, 4GB pc8500

If it's strictly for gaming and those games don't utilize the extra cores then keep what you have.

No, keep the E8500. Better yet, overclock it to >4.0ghz

Or get an i7.
