I've spent the better part of the last 20 years getting good at playing real instruments,
and these kind of things make me want to puke.  Tongue

Invest some time and learn to play the real thing...  Roll Eyes

If you're going to play that piece of junk guitar, why not just learn real guitar. This is a pointless shortcut in my eyes as well, but unfortunately it may sell. Although, sales of games like Guitar Hero and Rock Band have been down (I think). Who knows. I can understand the video games, but this is just stupid.

Cool

They market these towards kids as "a cheaper alternative to an actual electric". How long do they expect the life of one of their paper guitars to be in the hands of a child? I can't see one lasting more than 1 or 2 months...after buying two or three of those you might as well have bought an actual guitar.

At my local music shop you can get a beginners guitar and amp for $100 new. (and I'm pretty sure I've seen the same set for sale secondhand in good condition for $50) It may not sound the best but it sure as hell beats that piece of paper, and it'll last about 100 times longer.

Technology is great but sometimes you just can not substitute for the real thing.

I think part of the reason there is a market for these and Guitar Hero is that many people want to play guitar, but are not willing to put forth the effort and time required to actually learn. Out of all the students I've had, I would say no more than 5% really put forth the effort and time and learned to play reasonably well. And the 'chords' he played are not true chords. They are shortcuts that will get you by and allow playing some songs. Besides, for all but the smallest hand, that neck is entirely too small to play full chords.
Like Shane, I've spent many years learning and I'm still learning. The problem is, at my age, I will not likely improve. I was once asked it I would like to play Guitar Hero. I told them I would rather play the real thing, thank you.

Yep, that's about it.  For me, 7 yrs of teaching back in the 70's, with students coming and going all the time:  The tally:

1 genius (started at age 8, classical guitar, went on to study music).

1 near genius (started at age 11, classical and rock)

2 really, really good students (one was a female in her last year of law school).

The rest: Some OK & tolerable, some just putting some $'s in my pocket.

A few others:  Please, please, please quit, you're driving me crazy.

I "fired" 3 students over those years:
One student: "Don't come back next week unless you know the lesson upside down and backwards".  (He never came back.)

Two more in the middle of a lesson: "Get out, get out, get out, and don't come back."

Those 3 were very extreme cases who for many weeks stretched my usual patience to its limit.

After 7 years I fired myself and went back to working as an accountant.

Yes, but remember how good you felt with those that really put forth the effort and actually had talent? Smiley
