An AN-124 came into PHL to pick up a couple Chinooks going overseas.  I couldn't stick around to see her depart.

Enjoy!!  Smiley

Wonderful shots... Smiley

Been on those aircraft a good many times and know a few of the crews.

Wonder why they did not send them on the C5A Galaxy?

Awesome!  I was lucky enough to work with one of those when they brought 2 Mi-17's to Abbotsford (CYXX) for Kelowna Flightcraft.  Very impressive aircraft.

Volga-Dnepr often carries military equipment.  I was told it had something to do with range, I guess the AN-124 has longer range than a C-5.

Goodly morning all... Smiley

I think Cory just answered my question as to why the AN 124 was used and not the C5A Galaxy.

It would seem it is a civilian sale of disposable military equipment and therefore I would imagine  a civilian company would have to be used.

It would also seem from internet sources that the AN124 will carry about twenty-five percent more payload one thousand kilometers farther than the C5A also.

The airport where I used to work was close to the base for the Navy's Special Boat Team.  They would often deploy on a AN-124 instead of a C-5, which is where I heard it was because of its range.  We used to get quite a few comments from spectators about US military equipment being flown on Russian transports.

Since the Boeing Plant is just a little ways from PHL a lot of equipment is shipped out of PHL.  The AN-124's usually come in for the Chinooks and every once in a while when they ship a V-22 they bring in the Super Guppy.  There were rumors the the AN-225 was going to be coming in but of course it was just a rumor.  Sad

Also, the AN-124's use PHL to refuel before going across the Pond because they get a cheaper price.
