I am a newb and I really didn't want to ask those dumb questions but.....I can't get FS 2004 to work online. I saw the FAQ sticky, and followed the steps under number one, but I don't see a CD Rom game tab and every search I type for FS 9 or other variation, the only result that pops up is Airport mania. I never did get a prompt to download any software, but I was able to login with a hotmail account...so what did I do wrong? Is there a better number to follow to get online with all the other people?

These were the instructions I was following:

1.The Zone.
This method is easy enough but involves downloading “The Zone” software, setting it up and having a free Net Passport (if you have a hotmail or msn email address then you have a Net Passport if not then sign up for a hotmail address at www.hotmail.com ).
Do not start your flight sim yet!!
Go to http://zone.msn.com and click on the CD Rom games tab. Choose the Flight sim button (don’t worry that it says FS2004) if you are not signed in you will be asked to (this is the NET Passport bit).
Once signed in you will have a page which displays all the flight sims available. Click on your choice. At this point if you don’t have “The Zone” software you will be prompted to Download and Install it. (This is a one off unless you have to uninstall it. For any problems relating to this software check the FAQs on “The Zone”)
Once downloaded and installed you will be taken to the “Lobby” from which all the games are hosted simply choose a game and follow the instructions.DO NOT  have your flight sim started at this point it will start automatically once you click on  the join tab in the game’s room. (These instructions relate to CFS1+2 also. I have not tried CFS3 multiplayer but I suspect it will be the same.) Once in the game a chat box will appear and you may get instructions or ask questions there.

Follow any instructions given by the host and play away.

Not sure what the Zone is, but everything you need for MP, is already built into FS9, no additional software needed.  Wink

You will need to prepare your Firewall and router(if you use one) ports before connecting though.  Wink

This link here will guide you through the port opening process:
http://205.252.250.26/cgi-bin/yabb2/YaBB.pl?num=1252421080

Your options are to either open all 106 ports, or disable your firewall before flying online.
I recommend opening the ports for the obvious security reasons,
but also just to know that you won't be the one causing a catastrophic connection failure for others while online.  Wink

Once that is done, connecting to the server is just a few clicks away in FS9.

-Start FS9

-Click the Multiplayer tab

...

-Click Open Session

...

-In the IP Address window, type:  fs.netfrag.org

-Enter your Player name in the box next to the IP address box

...

-Click the Search tab

...

-When it locates the server, click the Join tab.

...

-A chat box should then pop up, if not, press Enter and it will.

...

-Now go to your settings, and lock your frames at 20

...

...

-Finally, go to Create a Flight, and set up your flight as normal.

...

There are usually several of us flying online at various times of the day, with group events on the weekends, which are set up & posted here in the multiplayer board.

Any questions, let us know, and we'll do what we can to help.  Smiley

Your welcome!  I have addressed the FAQ, as it was getting quite old and out dated.  It appears as though 'the Zone.com' aren't even around anymore. That would drive me crazy as well.  Grin Wink

you have no idea how upset I was getting that I was following the FAQ and just could not understand why I was going to a website to go online with FS 04. It was driving me nuts! I just had no idea what I was doing wrong. I appreciate it! Oh, and if I run into you online, don't worry. Im no buzzer...lol. Probably am ugly as a buzzard...but not a buzzer. lol

Jim,

Now that you know how to get on multiplayer..... make sure that you have done the port opening as per the info in the stickies.

If you don't have your ports open... it can cause others to get kicked off the server, or not to be able to join.

best,

...........john
