I'm AWOL and so are many of you. 

A long hot summer, they said...and it is turning out to be just that.....a cool wet spring punctuated by a major flood, and now a near draught and heat indexes in the 100F range.
In spite of that, being outdoors is great, and there's a never-ending list of jobs around the house and yard (Damn, I love my new lawn tractor.)...not to mention the visiting grand children, genealogy road trips, class reunions, little flights in Mike's Swift and all that pesky real-world paperwork and stuff too. 

OMG, it's really cutting into our CFS2 time.  But this too shall pass, and (like MacArthur) we shall return....or more contemporarily...we'll be back.

Served with a survivor of that particular event....an 18 year-old gunner off a B-17   Last saw him in '68.  He's long gone now, but he was hell on wheels and I'll always remember him. 

Was at my 48th class reunion last month...at a school that has been closed for 42 years, and told a fellow alumnus that one day one of us would call another and say, 'We're the last two.'  He said he would like to be the last one.  I asked him what he would do.  He said he'd bring a bottle of bourbon, drink a toast to St. Joe Prep, undefeated since 1968 and then turn out the lights and lock the building.  Yes, we're fading away....but that's not a bad thing.  And with the dumbing of America, the place is going to hell in a handbasket anyhow.

Following up and that cheery observation, I've been trying to console myself lately with the rational that
an interesting life sure beats the hell out of a life well lived.
To bad I couldn't have figured out how to do both.
