I remember this wreck, he's even luckier that it happened in practice. If all 43 cars had been out, he wouldn't have lived.  Undecided

Micheal Waltrip had an almost identical wreck in the exact same spot during the race:

The angle that he hit the wall reminds me of the Ernhardt crash at Daytona. Makes you wonder whether the changes made after might have saved the lives of these two.

Neither of the two guys in these videos died.  Wink

The crashes displayed here were caused by a track fence gate that stuck out a little too close to the race track,
and the drivers, in their on going goal to use as much of the track as possible to gain speed,
eventually found it the hard way.

Expat's video occurs 2 years before the one I posted.  After the one I posted, they finally removed that gate.

Also, the cars in these videos were traveling below 100mph,
the extreme damage was caused by a pole mounted to that gate,
catching the cars body work and opening them like a can.

Earnhardt's death, was caused by him slamming nose first into the wall,
going from 180mph to 0mph in less than a second,
snapping his spine at the base of the skull,
and impaling him on the steering column.  Shocked  Cry

The safer-barriers, and Hans-device would maybe have saved Dale,
and most definitely would have altered the severity of the two Bristol crashes here.  Wink

Maybe I worded it wrong Shane. I meant that maybe the reason they did not die was the changes made after Dale's crash. I did not look closely enough to determine when they occured, I just assumed  Roll Eyes they happened more recently. And I was aware of the speed involved in Dale's crash, as well as other factors. I think just about every body knew, considering how much information was on the news and internet. Another thing, is that the damage to these two looked a lot worse than Dale's car, as I remember it. In fact, I was very surprised at the amount of visible damage to these two. But then I did not know abut the gate.

That's because when these two crashes occurred, the cars were still largely based on, and still included a large portion of their road going counterparts.  Wink

Dale's car and today's version of the car share only the roof panel. The rest is a purpose built race car. Kind of defeats the name of "stock car". Cry  Roll Eyes

Not useless, interesting. When did these happen?

Waltrip's crash was in 1990,  but I was wrong about Harmon's crash, it was 2002, but still before they got the safer barrier.

The one before Waltrips that I was thinking of was Rusty Wallace's fun ride down the straight: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n1ib5bxdOrc
