I've been sent a lot of api files - Red 'plug-in' things but with no instructions how I use them for the sceneries I'd like to use them in.....can someone help me out with how I use them?

As I understand it, API files (often referred to as API Macros) are intended to be used in Scenery design programs such as "Airport for Windows" or "FSSC" and may even be imported into "GMAX".
I don't use any of those programs - too old to learn new tricks and they all have a "learning curve" - but many of the scenery enhancements which are found on DL sites in past years were created by them.

You want to go to this link-
http://www.fsdeveloper.com/forum/downloads.php?do=cat&id=5&sort=date
...and get 2 programs.
ModelConverterX and Library Creator XML 2.0 (on page 2).
MCX will import those APIs and convert them to .mdl files.
Library Creator XML 2.0 will compile those models into object libraries that you can use with programs like EZ-Scenery to place the objects.
While your there register for the forum and thank Arno Gerretsen for creating these gems and giving them to us for free!

Be aware that the Converter program, while working quite well to create FSX mdl files, is still very problematic when creating (converting) FS2004 (FS9) mdls. A few work but many simply do not.
Arno is aware of this.

Thanks for info. As I have these files I'll give it a whirl. If I get some useable objects despite my fumblings I'll be a winner! It'll also be another step up in my education

I've been creating .api files lately for use as ground polys at airports...seems to be the only way to get them to display shadows and appear painted on. If working with FS2004, why not try out SBuilder (file here:
http://www.simviation.com/cgi-bin/syb2.cgi?section=misc&file=sbuilder.zip
). It's freeware and allows placing macro and .api objects. Simply place the .api file in the scenery subfolder in SBuilder and it will permit placing those .api objects. Good luck.
