I went to Holland last Friday to the Dutch Air Force display (one for your calender if you get a chance and the fist display I did not spend a cent, even entry is free Shocked). Anyway, the Red Arrows were among the many display teams who participated. As usual, Red 10 did the commentary and the Reds themselves broadcast during the display as normal, however, that is where the normalities end. It sounded like a women's tennis final at Wimbledon after that. No longer the clipped instructions from Red One, "Smoke on go" etc, but whoops, screams yerrrs and aerial high fives.  Apparently, according to Red 10 it is the new way they psych themselves up for a good display. Personally I find it very annoying and unprofessional use of the radio. Not only that but you can't understand a thing that they are saying. Anyone else noticed this. As far as I could tell it sounded like Martina Hingis and Venus Williams had got a back seat trip Roll Eyes

I can't say I've heard them do a lot of that. Yes they do scream, but a lot of the time that they scream is when they're doing a high g turn or something like that.

As seen in a video about the Red Arrows, Thunderbirds, Snowbirds and Blue Angels at Canada air show here (from about 3:30 onwards) they say that they need whooping up. If they can shout, then it's up to them to. They don't have to transmit everything they say to the display speakers.

They know what to expect and roughly when, it's just the shout which confirms when the action is to occur. I think I've noticed much of the same for years, so I can't see it being anything too new.

I was watching Kembel display today online (thanks mic) And i noticed this to. I think its taking it over the top in terms of emphasising things. In the past you would always get a giggle out of hearing red 1 calling formations out as though he'd just been kicked in the family jewels. But this was as though he'd just found his missus in bed with his best mate and he was yelling at them both lol.

I was at Kemble on Sunday & really didn't notice much difference in the radio chat from previous displays. The Reds have a new leader this season & it's just his way of doing things.

To be honest I could do without the radio chatter during the display but the crowd seems to like it. I noticed that everyone around me was smiling. I find it helpful when trying to photograph breaks as you know exactly when to press the shutter button.

I've seen the Reds display many times over the years but was very impressed by their performance on Sunday. They've recovered well after the training accident in March. The commentator said that Red 6 is still in a wheelchair & is not expected to fly again this year. His replacement is the Synchro Leader from 2008. http://www.raf.mod.uk/reds/behindthescenes/red6.cfm

Exactly opposite to what Red 10 reported in Holland. He said he was out of his wheel chair Huh
