Perks of the job, I got the jump seat in a Q400. A nice flight with a clear skys, visibility was unrestricted and it was very smooth. We were lined up, nice approach, nice touch down and a gentle coast down the runway bleeding speed. All very sedentary. Then two of the largest hares I have ever seen, lopped out into the middle of the runway and sat down. Now I am not one for exaggeration, but I have seem smaller Shetland ponies Shocked. Now I don't know if anyone has experience of a hare or rabbit strike, but the damage can run into $$$$$$$$$$. Not sure if the pilot acted on me, or it he was doing his own thing, but after the words from me, "hit them and you will be AOG for a week", I was hanging in the seat belts and trying not to become one with the centre pedestal. I now have a nice welt under my chin/neck from the seat strap. The Q400 is such a cheap bit of crap, would you believe that the jump seat seat belt is the same as a car seat belt!! Any way, I like to think I saved the day Grin Grin

Welcome to the pointy end Matt... Grin

I have experienced several windscreen bird strikes at altitude, on take-off and landing.  Done several go arounds because of runway obstructions due to vehicle runway incursions at controlled airports.
I have had animals (deer, moose etc) wander onto the runway on scheduled daily flights at uncontrolled airports.  These were controlled airports that Transport Canada did cutbacks at.

I had a window pop out on final approach in the DC4, caused some concern for the passengers and back end crew.  Picked up carb ice during a flight in the DC3 and the aircraft rolled forty-five degrees before we regained control, that was different.  Several engine problems with the DC3 caused a return to airport, one I remember was too much oil which syphoned out and spread along the port side causing alarm to the passengers.

Not sure if this counts or not but we picked up a bunch of contractors with the DC3 who had been on site out in the boonies for several weeks, they got into the wine and started to use the pouches at the rear of the seats as sick bags...stinky...eck... Grin

Commercial and military aviators are trained for just such the experience you had but it is always nice to have a respected trained Aviation Technician along just to show you folks our little bit of the picture from the pointy end.   Grin

I bet you enjoyed that flight all the same  Matt.... Wink    Grin

Cheers...Happy Landings...Doug
P.S. I really did have a boring career as an aviator, wish I had been a Chef.

No problem. Put the phones on first, then the hat.  Roll Eyes

All joking aside, if you had become a chef Doug, we would not be honored with your presence. We might not know what we were missing, but SimV would be less for it. I, for one, am glad you became a pilot.
Cheers,  Smiley

If God intended aircraft engines to have horizontally opposed engines, Pratt and Whitney would have made them that way.
