You cannot alter a compiled mode;

You need the source files.

If a devolper does pass away..it is not free to use.....the copyright passes to their heirs.

Ive seen so many people ask how to convert an MDL, it's not even funny!  Grin Actually, when I started out, I asked this too. I now realize that I should have done some more research.  Cheesy

You know, this comes up often enough that there really ought to be a sticky about it...

It's a good idea, but I'm no modeler, and wouldn't know enough of the particulars to make any sense with it.  Wink

Someone post a good explanation about it, and I'll sticky it.

I haven't done it before, but I think Ive read somewhere that a pure green alpha channel makes the texture completely transparent.

Since Alpha channels are converted to a gray scale when converted to DXT3 .bmp or .DDS/DXT3 or .DDS/DXT5 format...

...the "pure green" is converted to "pure black" (RGB:0,0,0)

The only reason for using "pure green" is for human consumption, i.e., it's pretty tough to "see" pure black!  Cheesy

Also, while I agree with the intent of the "sticky post" do realize that it's disengenous to state that there aren't any programs that will convert .mdl files. There are -in fact- several...

...however in every case the amount of work needed to make the mess-of-welded-mesh back into a viable format simply isn't worth the effort required!

The reason I put in the sticky that there are no programs to convert mdl files is to discourage people from trying to use them, but I guess I could edit the post...

No, don't change it! Those who ask such questions wouldn't understand the "real answer" anyway, so why bother?  Wink

They will either "move along" or attempt to learn Max/GMax/FSDS/GSU themselves, and then won't be tempted to take "shortcuts!"  Grin

LOL, OK. I changed it back to how I originally had it, stating that there aren't any programs for it. And what's GSU?

Google Sketchup (GSU).

http://sketchup.google.com/#utm_campaign=en&utm_source=en-ha-na-us-google&utm_me...

Arno's Model Converter X (MCX) now has the capability to import COLLADA (.dae) files from GSU and convert them to FS9 or FSX scenery model (.mdl) files.

Oops, sorry.
And I just read his post, I guess that would have helped my search. Grin
Although the ModelConverterX does not convert animations or textures and it exports the models at the end of all the animations so it looks weird. Tongue Sad

That's because MCX is coded for scenery, not aircraft!
