Yea, I read about this a few months ago. I wish them the best of luck, as it would be incredible to see one of these fly again.

So they are just going to go for a "restore" rather then upgrade it?

Could you imagine it with an all glass flight deck, and the same motors off the Euro Fighter? Would be a much better plane, and cheaper to operate since they would be able to get spare parts from something that is in use by 6+ countries rather then 2. Just any thing would be better then the original motors.

Or even better in an extream case, see if they can get the SR-71 motors and have these installed

Can you imagine how much that would cost? This project is unlikely to succeed as it is. I wish them luck but I'll believe it when I see it.*

*I said that about the Vulcan & was proved wrong in that case.

I understand what you are saying about the price for an upgrade...but the whole reason it mothballed was because it was to expensive to maintain and operate, so now they want to "restore it" to it former glory??? That in it self is a money pit.
For the same price they could just upgrade the main things that were costly, mainly the motors, leave the flight deck as it, with what every is required by the FAA to operate. And the one time coast would be better then trying to pay the same price spread out for operating the old equipment.

Look at the C-5M for example, it flys faster, the new engines require far less maintenance, burn far less fuel while making more power. With the new upgrades to the flight deck, it can fly the same fuel efficient routs as the commercials planes, and fly even higher above those planes. And parts can now be had by suppliers that are currently in business and are shared by other planes making replacement parts cheaper and easier to come by.

I think you're missing the point. This is a proposed restoration under the original type approval for occasional flights at air displays. There is no intention to carry passengers or put it back into service. Any modification would involve new type approval which would not only be expensive & time-consuming but I would say impossible in the current economic climate.

I'm sorry, I thought they wanted back on regular flights Tongue

Never mind then, I just got off work, and was still stuck in revenue mode.

Its a good idea then Smiley

That alone will be expensive enough. Gaining a new type approval for (a) Concord, it would be cheaper to build a new one. I have to agree with Hagar on this one, can't see it happening.

I personally would like to wish them the best luck in the world. It is a worthy and challenging goal, but if the 558 team could do it then why not? It'd be lovely to see her back where she belongs!

The problem here though is that VTST end up asking the general public for around £1 million every year to keep 558 flying and every year scrape through thanks to some generous chap with more money than common sense. I can’t imagine the public stumping up that kind of cash to keep two hugely expensive aircraft flying each year. Love to see it though.

Back in the mid 1990s when I was a lorry driver/transport manager I'd deliberately plan my route so I'd be in the vicinity of LHR at around 1030, just to see her take off. It's still the most awesome aviation sight imaginable and if they get her back in the air I'll be there with bells on.. along with the missus and kids! I took Gemma to Heathrow on the 23rd Oct. 2003 when all 3 made their final landings and she was full of emotion, I only wish I'd taken her to a full with fuel, full powered take off, that was something else.

Slightly off topic (ish) but the very last departure from LHR, I think it was 23rd November 2003, to Filton I was there. The weather was grim, grey skies and rain on and off. She lined up on 27R, fired up those engines and took off.. Almost immediately a break in the cloud appeared, the sun shone through it and through she went... it was the ONLY hole in the cloud cover. Amazing sight, it brought a tear to the eye.
