I just got a new computer with Windows 7 and I can't seem to get CFS 2 to complete the installation. I read on this forum that CFS will work on Windows 7 but I didn't see anyone with installation issues. It starts the installation but stops after starting the second disk. It gives a read error. The disk was dirty so i cleaned it, it would stop at 39% the first time, after cleaning it it stopped at 52%, so i tried cleaning it again and polishing it and it went to 69% before stopping. The disk looks pretty good, it has some very minor scratches but I'v had lots worse that worked just fine. It might be a bad disk, but I was wondering if i need to load it in a compatiblity mode? If so how?
I currently have an operating version on my old computer, is there any way to transfer the working one to my new computer? Would it work to copy the folder THEN use the disks to install over it? I can't seem to find a source to buy a new or used copy of it either just in case. All I really need is disk #2 I think?
I'm open to suggestions, any and all!
Thanks,
Tim

Yes, you can transfer an existing CFS2 installation from your old computer to your new one.  Smiley

It is quite simple since CFS2 is a stand-alone application that does not depend on registry entries.   All you need to do is create a Microsoft Games folder in the Programs folder of your C drive on the new computer and copy your old Combat Flight Simulator 2 folder into it.   Then create or just copy paste the CFS2 shortcut to the CFS2.exe file to your desktop.   You're ready to go.  Smiley

I'm running Vista and XP, not 7, but I've never had a problem doing this with an installation that began eight years ago and has resided on 4 different computers using ops systems from 98 to Vista.  Wink

Hope this helps....keep us posted.  Cool

Thanks Tango, it wasn't quite that simple but I got it to work!  Cheesy
I went to copy the CFS2 folder like you said, and I have no idea why or how this happened, but on my old computer there was no CFS2 folder! ALL the files were randomly installed on the HD jumbled up in the Microsoft Games folder. So I copied them all to a flash drive, so I thought, and placed them into the new computer in a newly created Combat Flight Simulator 2 folder.
Didn't work, said I was missing a file? I couldn't find it.....so.....I pulled out disk one and tried re-installing it over the copied files in hopes it would do a "re-pair" not re-install. I'm not sure what it did exactly, but when I got to disk 2, the problem, it kept popping up can't read file " so and so", ALL day. I chose "Ignore" each time this happened. Eventually it said "Installed succesfully"!
It took ALL day but it works great now!
I'm sure your trick would have worked if the files had been installed properly in the first place, but thanks to your direction we've got ignition! Grin
Thanks,
Tim

Well I thought I had it. It loads, looks normal, I can adjust settings etc....but as soon as i launch a mission, doesn't matter if it's training, quick mission, single mission, campaign, the mission starts loading then it crashes to the desktop. It says Microsoft is working on the problem.
Yeah right.....anyone know how I can get it to run on Windows 7? Does it need to run in a compatibility mode? It installed without doing that. If so how do I run it in a comp. mode?

Tim:  I'm running Win7 64 bit and my installs work fine.  I transferred them from my XP puter.  Sounds like you need a new disk.  I think they are still pretty cheap out there.  Good Luck!

Tim, Sully answered this question in the original thread you posted.   You must have missed it:

I'm running my versions of CFS2 on Windows 7 64bit without a hitch.

I'm using run in XP SP3 mode, something built into 7"

From your START menu, select HELP and type Comaptibility Mode into the search box.  Cool

Let us know how this works for you.  Wink

It didn't work. I think my installation is corupt. I think they are right I need a new disk. Actually just disk 2 is what i need.
I can't find a new copy of this game anywhere unless i want to pay $30-75 for it. I can't justify paying this much for such an old game with no gaurantee it will even work! I've found a few used version but even used it's around $30!
Why so much for such an old game. I can get CSF3 for $9 at most places that sell software, but I can't find this one except online and expensive.
Any more ideas....I really liked this CSF better than the others, but not for that price.

Forget the bad CD for a bit.

What I can't understand is you having a problem running the working installation of CFS2 you transferred from your other computer.   From your previous post, it seems that the transfer from the other computer could have  been muffed.  Undecided

Also, are you using the NoCD file, or are you trying to run the good installation using the bad CD? Undecided

I can understand your frustration, but bad CDs are fairly rare, and the seller has to stand behind what he sells on Ebay.

The recurring popularity of CFS2 is due to it being more flexible than any other flight sim as far as addons and the extent of the modifications and customized features that can be made.

I'm surprised that you cannot find a copy on Ebay for around $10, but I haven't been shopping lately and haven't had mine out of the case since the day I bought it about ten years ago.

I've watching but they just aren't available, if they are they want way too much for it. You know I haven't tried the no cd route. I'll try that next.
My transfer very well may be muffed, but I think it would be futile to try again. You see it didn't install in a single folder on my old computer, it had files/folders all over the place inside of the microsoft games folder. So I just basically transfered the whole MS games folder. I have NO idea how/why it got installed that way, I just know it worked on that computer.
I'll try the no CD option cause yes the #2 CD seems to be the one that is not reading.

That didn't work either. HOWEVER i did not have the NO CD installed on my old computer, so I tried booting the game again with the "bad" cd on the old computer. It works fine. For some reason my new computer is not reading the disk 2. I'm almost positive the installation is corupt, that's why it's not running. But I can't re-install if it won't read that disk.
I'm trying to make a copy of it on the old computer and see if the copy will load on the new. Disk 1 reads fine on both computers. Somehow I should be able to make this work!

WOOOOHOOOOOO Cheesy Cheesy Cheesy
I'm so smart!
I made a copy of disk 2 on my old computer, uninstalled CSF2 in my new computer and tried re-installing with the original disk 1 and my copy of disk 2. It installed without any hitches! Better yet it plays without crashing to the desktop! I put the NO CD file in there so I won't have to access these stupid disks anymore!
