FS won't run & I get a message I've never seen before.  My computer has run out of available memory - run disk cleanup for free space & try again.
I've actually got 235 GB free & 15 used.   I don't know what to do next & would be grateful if someone can tell me how to put it right!  I'm running XP. Oh - FS is 14.5 GB....
Huh

What has memory to do with disk space?
To make sure it's a legitimate Windows warning message rather than a malware trying to deceive you into downloading some fake cleanup tool, please post the exact entire text of the message, or better yet a screenshot of the alert window.

you will see that warning message when you have too many things running at 1 time, and you do not have enough RAM to run FS.  You need to close some programs/services to free up some space on the RAM.   (you may have 2Gigs of ram, but FS9 will eat up maybe 3/4 Gigs if run on PURE DEFAULT SCENERY AND PLANES... now add PHOTOREALISTIC Scenery, Real Environment Extreme, Active Sky (for weather patterns), and a super highly detailed aircraft and you will have your ram SCREAMING for help.

There is a Program called "GAME BOOSTER" that can help to close/shut down/temporarily suspend these ... unneeded "services" when you want to run Flight Sim .... http://download.cnet.com/Game-Booster/3000-18541_4-10913645.html         ----- you can download it if you want to. up to you.

If you do nothing else, I would suggest that you go into the FSX forums, and read the VERY TOP thread in that Forum.  ..... yes i know it is in the FSX forums, and you might have FS9... But follow the thread anyways and do what it tells you.  -- OH, you dont have O&O Defrag?? No problem, when you get to the parts that talk about O&O, just run Windows Defrag (even though it is not as wonderful).

If you dont feel comfortable doing either of these, hit CTRL+ALT+DEL  and then find services that you know that you do not need running while you are flying and close them out.... WinAmp, Cd creating software, Limewire, Yahoo! Messenger, MSN Live / Messenger, Windows Media Player, CTFMON.EXE, GoogleUpdate, Iexplorer (BUT DO NOT END TASK EXPLORER.EXE -- THAT WILL SHUT DOWN YOUR COMPUTER!!!), ..... any other programs that you see that you do not need.

By following the post in the FSX forums, and if you do get "Game Booster", you may see up to 10-20FPS INCREASE in your sim!!!  (results will vary depending on background services running, and computing power of your rig)

Happy Flying....

Thanks. The FS I am talking about is Golden Wings & it's stopped working in my gamimg machine as well as the laptop.  Both GWs iare 4.5GB but FS9 in the gaming job is 26 GB  & runs with no problems.    Both GW3 stopped this afternoon.  Why does FS9 work but not GW?
I'll check the link but I suspect a fault in GW3 now as FS9 runs alright  Undecided
Oh - I get 50-60 FPS with all FS9 sliders to the right but locked at 24.

I would still run the WINXP optimization that is outlined in the FSX forum no matter what the game / or system.  You will free up a lot of space.

As for your Golden Wings programs... I do not have these, nor have I ever heard of them.   But a few simple standardized questions may apply.   Have you downloaded anything for it in the past 3 days?  If you did, try removing it and going back to default.   Something has corrupted that 'game', or you installed something that caused it to become too big and require too much memory.

Another suggestion that I could offer, as a system cleaning utility, is CCleaner (www.ccleaner.com). ; You can clean your HDD of unneeded files (cookies, temp internet files, etc) run ADD/REMOVE programs with it, even SAFELY clean your system registry with it.    -- every time I run it, I clean out at least 200MB of crap that gets built up over time.  [downfall=if you have stored passwords on websites, you will have to type them back in as the cookies will be deleted]

All good advice. But you don't have to lose everything when running CCleaner. Open CCleaner, go to Options and then Cookies. Select the ones you want to keep in the left pane (cookies to delete) using control + click for multiples and then click on the right arrow to move them to the right pane (cookies to keep).

Also, there is a program called Ultimate Defrag you can download from cnet for free. It may not be quite as good as O&O, but it is a lot better than Windows defrag. It also gives you the ability to choose which files go to the outside of the disc (faster access) and which ones to archive or move to the inside of the disc. These things will help your computer run cleaner and faster, regardless of the game.

There is still confusion here.
The error message (which has not been posted literally yet) is about *disk space* and not about *available RAM*.

Thanks for info.
1 = FS9 now doesn't load.
2 = I've loads of space on each drive so why make more?
3 = None of this happened until I installed Golden Wings so before I try your suggestions I'm going to back up so I have copies of stuff, then uninstall GW3 & lots of things I don't need in FS9, & them see if FS9 will run.
4 = revisit your suggestions.

In the 5 yrs I've had FS9 I've never experienced anything like this before & may just do a new FS9 & add from my back-up as I need them.....probably!
FridayChild says something I've thought - space & memory but just to keep him happy I'll post exactly what the message says...."Your computer has run out of available memory.  FS will now exit.  You may not have enough free space on you hard drive.  Run disk cleanup to free up space & try FS again."

5 = I've removed GW3 from the laptop & reinstalled FS9 & it seems to be running well so far...... Huh Roll Eyes

I've copied GW3 back into the Awd-it without addons.  I added the Duxford scenery & got that message so it would seem I had/have a conflict with that.......the laptop's GW3's working too  Roll Eyes

these are 2 totally seperate problems.   1 is about MEMORY or RAM.  the other is about your HARDDRIVE.

1 solution is to end all of the processes that are using up MEMORY / RAM.  The other deals with cleaning the crap out of your Harddrive that you no longer need.

If you read through the WINXP (if that is the Operating System that you are using) thread in the FSX Forum, part of it talks about increasing the size of your "VIRTUAL MEMORY".   Virtual Memory is an area of your HARDDRIVE/Harddisk that is used like RAM.

This will help in errors such as this.  Your "VIRTUAL MEMORY" area might be too small, and it needs a little boost.

Yes the post is mainly for FSX, but if you are seeing a lot of OUT OF MEMORY ERRORS, then this portion can be applied no matter what game you are using.

part of the post contains the following... Post was made by NickN
Quote:
USING MORE/LESS or EQUAL to 2GIGS OF SYSTEM MEMORY IN WINDOWS XP x32 OR VISTA X32 with OOM

-OR-

HOW TO PROPERLY TUNE VIRTUAL ADDRESS SPACE IN WINDOWS (x32) FOR OUT OF MEMORY ERRORS

x64 operating systems do not need the following changes

PLEASE NOTE: This section is for anyone who sees out of memory error while using FSX. It applies to ALL circumstances.

to clear up confusion about this change.. the amount reserved for the cache is NOT and DOES NOT have anything to do with the amount of memory in the system or how much memory you are allowing access to the system!!

This change only tweaks the address space, relieving the OOM error. The 32bit system will use the physical memory installed up to 4GB regardless!

If you have FSX SP2, the exe file is already 2G+ aware

If you have XP or VISTA x32 and more than 2GB you need to MARK the OS for that use or it will ignore the sticks and never use them

x64 operating systems do not need the following changes

For XP:

disable hidden files and folder, then on the root C:\ you will find a file named: boot.ini

Open it in notepad and add the follwoing to the end of the OS boot line:

/3GB/Userva=2560

multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINNT="Microsoft Windows XP Professsional" /fastdetect /3GB /Userva=2560 <---- add it here

save and close the file

reboot

to set that back to default, simply remove the edit

If you are using XP SP2 and are running a dual, quad, OR a single core Intel HYPERTHREAD processor, make sure this update is applied
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=C2AB5A48-8240-4934-BBD8....

Systems running XP-SP3 does NOT need that update

For Vista:
WINDOWS VISTA ONLY:

1. Open a command prompt with Administration rights. You find the command prompt box under "Programs-Accessories-Command prompt"

2. Right Click the command prompt and select "run as administrator".

3. Enter in the box at the prompt: (copy/paste if you wish)

bcdedit /set IncreaseUserVA 2560

and press enter

4. Reboot

TO set that back to default in VISTA just start the command line prompt with Admin right again and type:

bcdedit /set IncreaseUserVA 2048

Hit enter and reboot

Make sure you have the VISTA updates from Windows Update installed that address out of memory errors too.

http://www.simviation.com/cgi-bin/yabb2/YaBB.pl?num=1188591122

As long as you have Vista up to date with Windows update... or SP1 for Vista installed, you should already have those patches

FSX RTM or SP1 requres the user mark the exe file manually using special software for 2GB+ use.

It seems that you have figured out the problem on your own, and found the offending file.  My suggestion, being that you now have FS9 back up and running fairly smoothly, and GW3 almost running fine, ... Delete and not replace the offending scenery and go about your merry way without it, or try to find a replacement for that area from another webvendor.

Hi....I've not got FS9 in either computer now.  I rather like the sepia feel of GW3!   The Duxford scenery that seems to be the problem has been in the gaming machine for at least six months running without problems.   In fact I accidentally had 2 sceneries from 2 different authors side by side at one stage & chose the best to keep & neither presented a problem.

Anyhow, I'll go through your link again so thanks for that.
Oddly too, Instant Scenery isn't working properly in the Awd-it machine - it'll only add one set of Ted Andrews objects & I have all the files for the others in place  Undecided
That's today's job sorted for me  Roll Eyes
Thanks again - I'll reply if I have another problem!
Oh - the Awd-it machine is Vista64 with SP2...... & half an hour after writing the above I reinstalled Instant Scenery & it's working well...
