well i knew it wasn't the autopilot, the aircraft didn't have an autopilot to turn on/off. Yes it was doing it with all aircraft. WTF can definitely mean What's The Fix, but it was used in the more common sense. i changed the FSX.CFG to FSX.ORIG.CFG and it cured the problem, and strangely enough my flight settings (ie, default flight) was all that changed other than that all the aircraft i've added now only display a single paint scheme (which isn't that big of a deal)

Check the "Show all variations" box on the aircraft selection menu.

Because the original aircraft doesn;t have an autopilot and the are no swithes in the cockpit, have a look in the aircraft.cfg and look for the following lines

[autopilot]
autopilot_available=1
flight_director_available=0
default_vertical_speed=700.000000
autothrottle_available=0
pitch_takeoff_ga=8.000000
max_pitch=10.000000
.......................

1 means available
0 means not

some developers and modellers for ease copy and paste other entries from other similar aircraft that may have autopilot or autostab.
