Can't sleep and am bored.  Sad

Ok musicians, what professional/semi-professional venue have you played in, type of music, instrument, group/solo, etc. I'll start off.

Rock; guitar; four, five, and seven piece groups; numerous clubs around my home state in the mid to late sixties, as well as a few sessions in recording studios. Of course, at first it was just local dances at high schools, National Guard armorys, American Legions, VFWs, etc. in about a five county area. Then came the clubs.

Definitely! It takes great talent to play the spoon. I can't do it.

A few years before I started guitar, I thought I wanted to play trumpet.

Guitarist in two different rock groups: January 1967 to March 1970, (guitar, bass/vocals, keyboards, drums) then January 1971 to March 1973, (vocals, guitar, bass, drums) with maybe 100 gigs all told in the Miami area, everything from frat houses to private houses to large halls to occasional bar gigs.

The music progressed with the times, from Rascals to Hendrix & Doors, etc. with the first group, then to Tull, Sabbath, and Crimson with the second group.

Our biggest kick with the first group: a rendition of the Doors 'Horse Latitudes' followed by 'When the Music's Over', a 15 minute showstopper.

Our biggest kick with the second group: King Crimson's '21st Century Schizoid Man'.

Totally burned out after all that, I must say, but what a trip it was.

You and I should get together and jam. Same time frame, same music. Well, I started a little earlier, 1965-1969.

Violin - 7th and 8th grade
Cello - 9th grade. Orchestra only had one other person playing cello.

Thought about learning to play the saxophone, but did not want to get involved in band marching.

While I was stationed at Ellsworth AFB, SD, I had a roommate who played electric guitar so I bought an Ibanez bass and a 200 watt speaker.  Could play the intro to "Maneater" by Hall and Oates pretty well. My roomate could play parts of "Stairway to Heaven" Cool

Paul, could you recommend an inexpensive Recorder for a novice? I have wanted one for some time, but never got around to getting one. And I'm not sure what to buy. I'm thinking maybe a Yamaha 20-Series 3-Piece C-Soprano Recorder (Translucent Blue) $4.71 USD @ Amazon, but as I said, don't know enough to choose.

I've got loads of them*, Larry...
Both plastic and wooden..
The little Sopranino, Soprano, Treble, Tenor, and Bass!

The plastic models, made by reputable manufacturers are perfectly adequate, and cost very little!
I cant detect any difference in sound between the Wooden models and the Plastic models.

Amazingly easy to play without any difficulty...just blow/breath** into it gently. Much easier than single and double reed, and Flute Instruments!

Lots of "Renaissance" fun when played in a group of folks!
...and lots of sheet music and books available.

A plastic Soprano will only cost a couple of Pounds, and the Treble is very nice!

Have fun!

Started in 1988,

- guitar (lead & rythym, acoustic & electric )

- bass guitar (currently own a 4-string fretless & a 6 string fretted)

- keyboards & piano

Started in 1994,

- vocals

- drums (currently own a 17 piece double bass set)

- potato bug mandolin (currently own a VERY old one that's been handed down for a few generations )

- violin

I've played with dozens of bands of various styles from death metal to jazz and everything in between . Most shows were in small clubs, with the biggest being a televised  $20 per ticket show at Richmond Indiana's 4th Floor Blues Club, playing in a jazz fusion band called the Deep End.

I've  since taken to writing & recording original material for my solo project called "Social Garbage".

Used to play Alto Sax in one of the most prestigious local high school bands, loved it, started in the 6th grade, only had the pleasure of playing with the high school band for my freshman year before moving to a school with a band that was so pathetic I packed up my sax in the middle of class one day, walked down to the office and switched to a study hall.  Its only left the case a couple times since then, its no longer enjoyable without a 100 other band members to play with. Cry

But with the first high school we had the honor of being invited to a collage for a concert, which was broadcast on a main local TV station, included one final song combining both bands...talk about being sardines on that stage Shocked  Also placed gold at 3 contests that year.  We could pack an auditorium to standing room only every time.  Also joined the "Honor Band" which combined the best from about 10 schools for a performance held at the local concert hall.  Miss those days, somewhere I still have a CD from the end of freshman year with the band that was done in a recording studio, would upload some of the songs if I could find it Undecided  Played a lot of songs from Robert W. Smith (my favorite composer) and James Swearingen.

As for now, starting to learn the acoustic guitar, which is going alright I suppose.  Few of us are trying to start a small country band to play locally.  One friend is great with the drums, his wife could probably go down to Nashville and score a recording contract in a heartbeat with her voice Shocked  Still trying to find another guitar player at the moment, see how this idea holds together in a few months Tongue  I'll stick to instruments though...I can't carry a tune if my life depended on it Lips Sealed

Oops! Forgot to post a response. Sorry Paul.
Thanks, think I will start with the C-Tenor and see how it goes. I play guitar by ear, so I will try the same with the recorder. Think I will pass on the book for now. I could buy four recorders for the price.  Smiley

Oops! Forgot to post a response. Sorry Paul.
Thanks, think I will start with the C-Tenor and see how it goes. I play guitar by ear, so I will try the same with the recorder. Think I will pass on the book for now. I could buy four recorders for the price.  Smiley

I find, if like us, you can play by ear, have a good sense if pitch and musical intervals, you can manage to play almost any musical instrument!... Smiley...!

I don't have any difficulty picking up most instruments and playing them, after a quick familiarisation with them!

(The same thing used to apply to the ladies, many years ago)... Roll Eyes...!

I played Bass guitar in various rock bands in the late '60s through the '70s.

Violin for a few years in various small, not so good, orchestras. (some of which are on Youtube...but I can't find them right now)

I also do a little singing in a couple of Choirs, and occasionally a bit of barbershop and at the moment some Divine Comedy covers Tongue

I've also been a sound tecchie in a small theatre since 2007 (also trained on LX, but prefer SFX)

Violin for a good 6 years. No real orchestras because my area lacks quality organized musical ensembles.

School orchestra for one year and hated it. This coming fall I am offered an honorary first violinist position for the school orchestra so we will see. There is no first section because none are able to fill it currently so if I get it I have some job security.

It's good to see a few people playing violin. What would orchestra music be without them? I took lessons in either the first or second grade and we 'played' a concert in the State Capitol. I remember very little of it. I tried to pick it back up a few years ago when my Dad got one, but it was a hopeless cause. I'll stick to six strings and let the talented people play four.

BTW, do any of you violin players know the difference between a violin and a fiddle?  Roll Eyes

I'm currently in a band, I play guitar, and we're in the process of finishing off our first album. Right now were recording all of it, then my drummer is leaving for Serbia for most of the summer, where he'll get us on the radio and advertise for us. Once he comes back we'll start with shows locally.

High Flight Oh! I have slipped the surly bonds of earth And danced the skies on laughter-silvered wings; Sunward I've climbed, and joined the tumbling mirth Of sun-split clouds - and done a hundred things You have not dreamed of - wheeled and soared and swung High in the sunlit silence. Hov'ring there I've chased the shouting wind along, and flung My eager craft through footless halls of air. Up, up the long delirious, burning blue, I've topped the windswept heights with easy grace Where never lark, or even eagle flew - And, while with silent lifting mind I've trod The high untresspassed sanctity of space, Put out my hand and touched the face of God.&&

Been an orchestral percussionist as a 'hobby' for close on 30 years. Hitting noisy items very hard is very therapeutic, but gets you away from the day-job!

So you name it, I've hit it; all manner of timpani and other drums, large and small, teeny weeny antique cymbals to huge 22-inch diameter monsters that feel like you're holding two fighting badgers at arms' length when you've smashed them together. Tuned gongs and enormous tam-tams that go 'wa-a-a-ah!' when you hit them on their sweet spot with a heavy beater. Vibraphones, xylophones, stylophones, maracas, castanets, tambourines, anvils...

On one memorable occasion I had to hit a large stationary metallic object three times with an enormous mallet to simulate the sound of hammer-blows of fate. (Anybody tell me what that piece of music might have been?)

Gustav Mahler Symphony No. 6

Impressive, Mr. Shane Cool

I wouldn't have guess that in a million years as I prefer Tchaikovsky.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Symphony_No._6_(Mahler)

Finale: Sostenuto - Allegro moderato - Allegro energico

The last movement is an extended sonata form, characterized by drastic changes in mood and tempo, the sudden change of glorious soaring melody to deep pounded agony. The movement is punctuated by three hammer blows. Alma quotes her husband as saying that these were three mighty blows of fate befallen by the hero, "the third of which fells him like a tree". She identified these blows with three later events in Gustav Mahler's own life: the death of his eldest daughter Maria Anna Mahler, the diagnosis of an eventually fatal heart condition, and his forced resignation from the Vienna Opera and departure from Vienna.

Aaah, you guys are too good! Perhaps I gave it away with the 'hammer blow' reference. Here's a couple from youtube to give you the feel:

I'd be lying if I said I didn't Google it, but I did listen to the entire piece. Wink

From Opera to Death Metal, if it sounds good to me, I like it.

Music is my first love. Cool
