Dave Slatski has uploaded his CFS2 conversion of Kristensen's wonderful C-54. Thanks, Dave! Smiley

My lack of enthusiasm for conversions in general is well-known, but I'll make an exception in this case. Smiley

It's a grand airplane in the download section now.......and one of the best features of the download is that it includes a nice AI for use in Mission Builder. We've needed a good C-54 to go with all the C-47s and the few C-119s in CFS2. Roll Eyes

There are some major problems with the C-54 download. But see the C-54 Fix thread to make everything work. Wink

Is there a Berlin airlift 'candy bomber' skin for this bird? My late uncle was one of the pilots involved who also picked up a DFC in Korea.

The original OD is nice, but she's begging for that post-WWII/Korean War Air Force look....just one of the new, improved bare metal jobs would look nice too. Undecided

...............I don't think we have room in the paintshop for a C-54 (........we had to knock down a wall to get the Sunderland in )

.......anyway, I'm reliably informed there are a load of re-paints already (plus a Paint Kit) at Flightsim (if you can get in)

........the Paintshop's busy with a few export orders at the moment .........

There are lots of skins for this plane at FlightSim, but few (very few) military skins. Cry

As a result, I have converted JBK's original FSX bare metal military textures from DXT3 to Extended 565 format for use in CFS2. They've just been uploaded, but should be available by morning. JBK grants repaint and posting rights for freeware use. Cool

Seriously though, thanks for clearing some of that stuff up TR. I've got a "fix it up" file that will be uploaded very shortly.

BTW, nice job on the aluminum deal there. In the email I received from the author, uploading skins are no problem. Just can't put helicopter blades on it or anything like that.

I couldn't find the paint kit, but now that there's a converted bare metal skin, it would make a nice basis for some repaints.....with a minimum of effort.

Here's a shot of that very aircraft in 1948 landing in Berlin....so she can be used for Korea. Cool

You did not see many large transports in Korea, as most of the airfields were too short or crude to handle the C-54. That's why there were so many C-46s, C-47s and C-119s around.

Yes Dave, They fit nicely. I have CFS2'ised them & toned down the yellow & day-glo colors a tad. Now to attempt to obtain permission to upload them.

Let's see:

USAAF Air Transport Command (ATC) was in existence from 1942-1947.

It became the USAF Military Air Transport Service (MATS) from 1948-1965.

In 1966, MATS became the USAF Military Airlift Command (MAC).

Today it is known as the Air Mobility Ciommand.

That should help us place various skins in the timeline. Cool

ATC insignia below was previously used by the USAAF Ferry Command from 1941-1942.

Yeah ow, the brightness of the yellow and orange would look good on a fishing lure, yours looks much better.

So there's a good possibility the MATS would fall into the Korean war time frame. I saw some black and white photos from this period with C-54"s. Now with Tango's info, I think the fog is lifted on markings.

A little more info...

The DC-4 made it's first test flight in 1938 and was in production from 1942 until 1946.

The ATC skin that Kristensen did and that I posted was an aircraft that was flying The Hump in 1945. Her tail number beginning in 0 indicates she was contracted for in 1940.....one of the early production aircraft.

Some of the other skins here have tail numbers that are puzzling to me in that the contract years don't seem to jibe with the contract and production span. Huh

For example, the two MATS skins begin with 7 and 9. They could refer to '37 and '39, though that seems a bit early for a contract, and '47/'49 is outside possibility....unless these are DC-6 or DC-7 skins adapted to the DC-4. However, I may be making some silly mistake. Checking further. Smiley

OMG! OMG! I've turned into a 'rivet-counter', or rather a 'tail-number-tracker'....a fate worse than death. Grin

Mystery Solved!

The tail numbers had gotten so high in WWII that the prefix (contract year) was often not included on the tail, not even one of the two digits.

Reference the MATS skin shown in this thread:
