I am trying to install a second/duplicate install of FSX on a second drive in Windows 7. I have renamed the main FSX folder, the FSX folder containing fsx.cfg, fsx.cfg, and fsx.exe in preparation for a duplicate install. But when I load disc 1, instead of installing the program, I get a choice of uninstall or repair only. Do I need to uninstall Acceleration first, or are there files to rename there as well? Also, when I renamed the fsx folder in C:\users\patchz\appdata\roaming\microsoft\fsx where fsx.cfg resides, and then ran the game with disc one in place, it created another  fsx folder and left the one I had renamed in place. Both have the renamed fsx.cfg. I also get a long lag with a black screen between fly and the screen loading or when I try to open the map, or close the map and go back to the flight. This is a lot more complicated than the same process for FS9 and I suspect it is so because of Acceleration. All help greatly appreciated.

The FSX installer looks in the registry to see if FSX is installed already.  It would be pretty difficult to do a duplicate install for FSX.  Sorry I can't really help, I don't have any idea what key it looks for, or where.

well you could cheat. Make a copy of your current FSX install and put it in a new folder. Then get FSXRegistry tool and point the registry to the NEW folder. This way you'll ahev two istalls BUT you'll only be able to use one at a time, having to reset the registry each time.

Could be a mess, IMJHO, but it is doable.

Is this a second hdd or a partitioned C drive? I thought a second hard drive should be named D:/ and the operating system on c:/ So one copy is on C:/ with the OS and one is on D:/ by itself. I may be right out to lunch on this, but that is how I thought it works.  Smiley

I know it's possible, Shane had two FSX installs and three FS9 installs at one time. But I'm not sure he had acceleration, and I think that may be part of the problem.

You're right Steve, it is two separate drives, C:\ and D:\. I'm sure someone that knows how will come along sooner or later.

Hi Larry

I think Nick N is the one to talk to. He posted how to do it awhile back.

If the purpose is just a backup then clone the 2nd hard drive, put it in the same system and select which hard drive you want at boot time.  Smiley

Not the purpose. The purpose is to have two separate installations of FSX. One for payware, limited though it might be, and one for freeware only. Similar to my duplicate install of FS9 on my old system. One was with VOZ, one without. I have the hard drive space, so this a viable option for me. I'm just having difficulty with the second install, and I think it is due to Acceleration, but I am unsure. It is entirely possible that I have missed renaming some folder or file that I was unaware of. Thus the reason for this post. If you do not have or have never had a duplicate install of FSX Acceleration, then your answers are likely to be in error for my purposes. I do appreciate the attempts to help though.
Cheers,  Smiley

Yes I do have acceleration on both copies.

You only need to do one install, then just copy and rename it.

I have only done this on XPpro, so I'm not sure if Vista or 7 will complicate things.  Wink

-Do your first Install as normal, preferably NOT in the C:Program Files folder.

-Make copies of the FSX.exe, FSX.cfg, and FSX main folder,

-Rename the copies of each to something else. (FSXfreeware.exe...etc.)

-Make sure that you leave the copied .cfg in the same folder as the original. It will still use the other folders in there.

-Place the copied .exe file where you want, and you should be good to go.

-Please note, that when you use auto-installers, it will need to be directed to which one you want it to go to as it will default to the copied install.  Wink (well, for mine it does.)

Thanks Shane, finally got it.  Smiley
It took me a while because after so many installs, uninstalls, swearing, deleting files, swearing, taking a swig of Jack Daniels, starting over, swearing, I had become a bit  Cheesy. I just have one other issue, so far. In the copy, when I try to save a flight, I get a black screen and it just hangs. Can you tell me how to change the path on saving flights to avoid this? It doesn't happen in the original.

Edited:
Ok, it's not just saving a flight, it is anytime I access anything in the toolbar.

Update. I sent Fr Bill a pm requesting help, but I guess he does not come by very often. I still have the same problem with the copy so I am not using it. I have put off the purchase of GEX pending a resolution. Hope someone with an answer comes along.  Sad
