No flights allowed to enter UK airspace, and all flights are grounded as the ash cloud heads our way.
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/8621407.stm
Scandinavia looks like it's having serious problems too.

I've been tracking this and it now looks like airspace in multiple Western European countries is completely closed! This is certainly unusual looking!

Closed airspace:

All UK Airspace,

Norway,

Belgium,

Northern France,

Western/Northern Germany,

Netherlands,

Denmark,

& probably Sweden and Finland will be shutting down soon too.

Do they have an altitude restriction? I guess the ash cloud is pretty high.

I don't think there are any problems for Microlight/Ultralight/Flexwing Pilots... Wink...!

Aircraft flying at 50,000 feet and upwards are mostly affected, eg; Commercial Passenger Jets.

The Ash is being carried aloft by the high altitude Jet Stream.

Paul....smokin'.... Grin...!

P.S ...Folks living around major Airports are enjoying beautiful peace and quiet for a change....and listening to the Garden Birds instead!... Smiley...!

Typical, I am on my shift off days and at work they are sat about drinking coffee and using the hanger as a sports hall Angry Grin Grin Nothing flying in Germany today.

Curiously, I have just looked on Google Earth and can see no sign at all of the supposed "volcanic ash cloud". It is making me think, collective European Government action, but for what I have not yet worked out. Probably a huge conspiracy to ground the airlines so they can refill all the chemical tanks with a new substance and then continue chemtrailing us. Will let you know if I hear anything Huh

Ash at 20,000-30.000 Feet...

Probably affecting lots of General Aviation Aircraft now?

Apart from clogging up the Air Filters, I wonder how much Piston Props are affected by the ash?

Paul... Cool...!

Is the problem most severe on Ash Wednesdays?.... Roll Eyes...!

RAF SAR and HM Coastguard helos have supposedly been unaffected by these restrictions. I wonder if that holds true for Bristow helicopters flying to rigs off the coast of Aberdeen.

These things have been known to erupt for time periods up to two years. Hopefully it won't cancel my flight to the UK in 2012. Perhaps it's time to start thinking about making a sacrifice to appease the volcano gods. Roll Eyes

Likwise the British Airways 747 that lost all engines enroute to New Zealand ..... they managed to restart them after descending out of the ash cloud.... only to fly back up into it and loose them again. They descended out of the cloud and restarted them, then rerouted to made an emergency auto landing in Jakarta as the cockpit window frosting made a CATIII approach look like 20 mile visibility. The aircraft looked like it had been put though rollers made of sand paper  ...... all leading edges were glass smooth and shiny.

..on the live BBC Radio News this morning...

Many, many Folks in the City of London, and around the Major Airports, saying how much they are enjoying the peace and quiet, free  from the constant drone of Aircraft overhead... Smiley..!
They are making the most of it, as it may be that last time in their lifetime that they will experience it... Kiss...!
My Sister lives in Fulham, in London, and she already noticed the lack of Aircraft, and their accompanying noise, when viewed from the roof-top of her block of Flats!

She wakes up to the sound of Bird song in the morning now....

...which is lovely... Smiley...!

Paul....in the quietness of my garden!... Cool...!

As this Volcano ash seem to mainly affect Commercial Passenger Jet Aircraft containing fragile turbines engines, what about the use of Piston Engined, Propeller Aircraft instead?
...possibly flying at lower altitudes?

It could be vital for Air Freight very soon!

There seem to be no problem with the General Aviation, Piston Prop Aircraft which occasionally pass over my garden?

Pistons and Propellers?

Indeed the piston-fraction doesn't seem to be affected that much: several (g/a) props were still flying today, though imo not as many as on a usual sunny saturday.

The question would be: does an a/c pistonengine have an airfilter like all cars have? I'd guess so... Only problem could be the pitot-tube then. And as stated in our lokal newspaper, the cloud manly affects heights above 6000 ft (or was it meters? And again confuzzlement about metric/imperial system). So low 'n slow should be perfect today - don't forget to entertain the flight controllers as they might be bored...

Yep...

Piston Prop Aero engines do contain Air Filters on the air intake to their Carburettors, like motor cars, etc, and are easily cleaned/replaced.

I would have thought that the Volcano dust would not have affected the Air Filters (clogging-up) any more seriously than Dust Storms, Sand Storms, etc, down nearer ground level.

Curiously, I have just looked on Google Earth and can see no sign at all of the supposed "volcanic ash cloud".

Last photo taken there was 2002-2008. More recent photos are 2008/2009 in most places. Seems unlikely to have volcano ash from eruptions that hadn't happened yet.

plus to get live imaging I beleive you need the expensive ver. of google earth

The images should generally be up to 3 years old. I believe the 'pro' edition of Earth and the Enterprise edition just gives you higher resolution prints and movie modes or something like that.

Live streaming would cost more than a $400 license I'm sure  Grin

...and look at the sky: not a single contrail and no 'noise' -just plain sunshine and the sound of birds...  Cool

Indeed. A lovely blue sky all day yesterday. No wind & not a cloud in sight.  Looks like being the same today. While I feel sorry for all those people stranded at airports I must admit it makes a nice change. I could easily get used to this. Wink

I drove from the Midlands back home to the South Coast yesterday. It was a real treat driving on the M25. No congestion or hold-ups going past Heathrow. Shocked This was the first time I've ever seen the motorway matrix signs saying Heathrow & Gatwick Airport Closed.

PS. No sign of the ash cloud where I was although my car is covered with fine dust.

Its easy to forget that that innocent? little Island, mostly covered in ice and snow, a few miles North of Great Britain, is actually an extremely geologically active part of the Planet!

...an interesting little discussion on BBC 2 Radio this morning.

The cost of driving from Hong Kong Airport, etc, to Great Britain by road, in the average Family Car, with fuel prices based upon UK prices including Tax, compared to a seat on a Jumbo Jet to convey one from point A to point B... Shocked...!

Distance by road.
Fuel cost per gallon.
Miles per gallon.

A VERY expensive drive!.... Shocked...!

Paul...I'm stopping where I am!... Wink...!

I saw on the news last night, they were talking about this volcano's last eruption about 100 years ago or something like that.  They said it lasted two years.  The only difference, it didn't matter to airplanes, as they didn't exist.
