I understand that FS9 should have no limitations on number of add on sceneries but however after having 1100 add ons, I just found out yesterday that FS9 refuse to allow me to add any additional sceneries.

Is there anyway to fix this via amendments to the config file?

Shocked That seems an awful lot of addons. If it's all scenery I'm surprised that Scenery.cfg can handle it.

The first thing I would do is to go through your Scenery Library & decide if you really need it all. Delete any 3rd party scenery you don't use.

The alternative would be to combine several scenery areas into one. This would need doing carefully & systematically.

I have often wondered if this arrangement would benefit me?

I have a large number of separate installations in my Add-on Scenery Folder, including my own LAGO and Ez-Scenery builds, and I list each Folder under descriptive names for easy recognition in my Sim Add-on Library...
Each named Folder contains its own scenery, and texture Folders.
...so there are lots of them!

Including all the .bgl scenery and .bmp texture files into one named main Folder would decrease the separate entries in the Library, but make it more difficult to locate any individual Files for editing or deleting, when required?

Any suggestions?

All the time it's working OK it might be just as well to leave well alone. If you wished to free up some space in Scenery.cfg you could always combine areas by the same author, like your own files, but only after checking them out in the usual way to make sure they work properly. If you give the BGL files appropriate file names it will be easier to identify them if you ever wish to remove them.

If you want to give it a go don't forget to delete the individual areas you intend moving from the Scenery Library before swapping file locations.

Ta, for the reply, Doug!

I think I will leave well alone for the present. It takes a long time to insert them all after a re-installation, etc, but at least it works with no problems...Wink...!

Just my 2 cents here, I keep all my add on scenery in a folder called FS9 scenery in the MS Game folder & backup the .cgf files now and then. If I have to reinstall FS, reloading all my scenery is just a copy & paste. Keeps my start up time minimal also.   Cool

How do you overcome the time consuming problem of having "ADD" each individual Add-On Scenery Folder to the Drop-down "Scenery Library" in the Sim, after a re-install, etc?

That's what I find takes the time when a lot of my Add-on Scenery files are involved.

Paul,

By keeping your scenery files in a separate folder all you have to do is copy your scenery.cfg file back into your FS file. Then FS will find your scenery files just where you left them. Learned that from some one 8 years ago. Works really well. Also, when you load FS each time your not loading MBs of scenery. You access the scenery files only when you enter that area. Saves you loading time and a lot of memory use. Which also keeps your frame rates reasonable. Has worked well for me.

Thx guys

After reading all these threads, I can declare that it is official now. The number of sceneries that FS9 can handle is 1099.

That seems an awful lot of addons. If it's all scenery I'm surprised that Scenery.cfg can handle it.

Well Hagar I have over 1100 sceneries (everything aerosoft, cloud9, overland, tropicalsim etc. plus all the Russian, Thai, France, Italy, Argentina flightsim sites' sceneries) and that is just sceneries. Over 100GB. I have placed all these on a seperate 1.5TB harddrive so there are plenty of space left. I think this is dragging the performance of my computer. Probably have to upgarde the processor to I7-960. My computer has 6GB of D2 ram and 3TB of Harddisk space with a fast ATI video card with 1GB but currently running on a AMD Pheomn process. Now I cannot increase the sim rate by more than 4x which is also annoying.

I guess I have to consolidate all the Russian, Japanese and French airports into just big folders call Russian airports, Japanese airports and French airports. However, doing these will definitely run into problems with texture files with the same names which means some objects are no longer going to have textures.

Welcome any suggestions

Interesting thread - it's been speculated about but I guess 1099 is a good number to stick to!

Dave, loading time is determined mostly by the number of aircraft active. If you run something like Filemon at startup, you will see that as FS loads, it first reads the scenery.cfg file, then all the aircraft files, then the modules.
Only when you select an area to fly in, will it start loading the actual scenery files.

Hello Chums... Wink...!

Using Dave's simple, copy-and-paste method of inserting all the Scenery Add-On Files in one go, how do you manage to set the important "Priority" of the Files (1, 2, etc) as you would normally do, using the "Add Scenery" step-by-step method, within the loaded Sim?

Fascinating subject... Wink...!

I think Dave is suggesting keeping all your 3rd party scenery in a folder outside the main FS9 directory. It's possible to activate scenery from any location on your PC as I pointed out in my FS98 Scenery Clinic. http://www.simviation.com/lair/FS98sc.htm

Then if you have to uninstall/reinstall FS9 at any time you simply paste a backed up copy of Scenery.cfg back into the new install. Your scenery directory remains intact & any priorities will be retained.

PS. This method should work with 3rd party scenery installed to the default Addon Scenery folder. Uninstalling FS9 will only remove files it originally installed. Just remember to take a backup copy of Scenery.cfg first.

I think I'm missing something out... Cry...!

I always keep all my Add-on Scenery Files in a back-up spare Folder for safety....

...trouble is...after reinstalling my FS 2004, etc, and popping all my back-up files into the Sim Main Add-on Scenery Folder I find that I still have to "Add area"/ "Activate" them all, one by one, into the Drop-down Add-on File Library, otherwise it is empty, apart for the Default Files.

All the advice for adding Scenery Files always mentions using the Scenery Library window for selecting the files (mouse) from the Add-on Scenery Folder and inserting and activating the Scenery Files, one by one, and then selecting their numerical order as necessary...all done manually....>>>>

Scenery Library

I find this is what takes the time after a re-install of the Sim.
