Welcome to the new season of formula one.
Bahrain kicks off the season this year.
Those familliar know the routine, all predictions to be in before the start of Saturday qualifying please.
Those who are new to the game, you get 10 points if you select the correct driver in the correct place, you get 5 points if you get the correct driver but in the wrong place.

The competition will be, decided by predicting the podium positions as was used last year, and if you correctly predict the front row for the start of the race you will earn an extra 5 points.

As an addition to the above, you can edit any early predictions before qualifying as you see fit, but as soon as qualifying starts they're locked... and that's it!

I'm not sure you understand lads...

Pick the top 3 on the PODIUM only, ie the race positions. If the qualifying finishes the same as your race predictions you pick up a bonus of 5 points.

Making 2 different selections for qualifying and the race will only complicate things.

Over to you Craig...

I didn't think that the top three qualifiers usually finish in that order that often, that's why I had two sets of picks.

This should make that 5 point bonus a fairly rare occurrence. Wink

OK, to clarify.
Pick who you think will finish 1st, 2nd and 3rd.
If they line up on the grid in that order you get a 5 point bonus... even if they all crash at the first corner.

Oooooer....

So basically, you predict either the qualifying positions or the race result, and hope it's a boring procession! Grin

Oh well, back into the routine...

1 Button
2 Barrichello
3 Vettel

Oh no, wait a minute, it's not 2009 anymore!

1) Hamilton
2) Button
3) De La Rosa Wink

I thought it was pick the front row for quali.
To clear it up. Why not go with that? gives the chance for more points if your behind??
Pick positions 1 and 2 "only" for qualy and you get 5 bonus points.
Is that ok?

Rob has got it ........... and yes it will be a rarity ....... especially if you have to take into account grid penalties held over from the previous race. However I think this season it will be less of a rarity because of the lack of refuling. Hence the reason I suggested it  Grin

Ergo ....... if you get the 123 for both quali and the race it's 35 points ....... if you only get the 123 for quali it's 5 points ....... etc.

Whatever you think Craig, you'll be doing the scoring! I personally think it will complicate things. I think eno was suggesting what I said, make your race predictions and if you "happen" to get it right for quali you score a 5 point bonus.

See I actually thought Eno meant the way I suggested it. The way I see it, as the season runs on we all tend to start selecting the same drivers, as the grid tends stabilise and the results are generally predictable.
With this new low fuel quali it really will be the best cars at the front, so I figured, it would give people a chance to make up points where they usually wouldn't be able to without taking a big risk with predictions.
End of the day its what the masses want. I am not too fussed either way. This is why I started the topic 2 weeks early Wink Grin

Todays autosport has a theoretical fastest single lap chart from a 90 second lap using Barca testing.
Out front is Mark webber. Followed by Hulkenberg, rosberg, schumacher and hamilton all in a very tight group. Then Barrichello, Massa, De la Rosa, sutil, Vettel, Buemi, Alonso, Button and Liuzzi.
All of these are grouped within 1.5 seconds. Webber appears to have maybe a 3 tenth gap on everyone else, then theres a further tiny gap from Hulk back to Alonso.
It might mean very little in the grand scheme of things, but Renault are a long way off that pack with Petrov being the quicker of the two, but Renault never got much low fuel running so not much to be seen there. Lotus and Virgin as expected are a long way back, with Lotus having the edge.

It all means nothing until the red lights go out on Sunday, Mercedes have a diffuser up their sleeve apparently, Mclaren's "Left-leg-operated-honestly-it's-not-mechanical-guv" drag reducing wing and no doubt other teams as yet unseen aero devices will probably surprise us all. Mitch's prediction might not seem so silly... look at last year.

I think I said it elsewhere, but the Merc Diffusor is supposed to have brought 8 tenths of performance in the car after a test at rockingham. How much there is to that we'll find out..
The Mclaren thing is ingenious but very complicated to understand in terms of how it's legal. But fair play to them, this could be this years double diffusor. As Whitmarsh has said, teams will try and copy it, but it will be very difficult to do as they have had to have their tubs/chassis homologised for the year. So where mclaren implemented it into that, the others will have to work around it.

The new track is a joke. 1:55 laps. This will end up going almost 2 hours.
The cars, who knows, aside from seeing the new teams 7 seconds off the pace, Rosberg is looking good this weekend.

The new section does look a bit Mickey Mouseish. Doesn't really add anything of note at all, other than time.

Karum Chandok will not participate this weekend as he missed the practice session this morning with gearbox issues. Rules state if you do not participate in at least 1 of the sessions you will not be allowed to run in the rest of the weekend.

Not much in the way of a surprise.
The Red Bulls long run pace over the winter and FP's has me ready to believe Massa and Alonso will have a fight for the win between themselves, and Mercedes and Mclaren will hound Red Bull.
As a side note, News is making the rounds that Mclaren have been told they will not be allowed to run their current diffuser after this race. I'll try and find more details.

Can someone (Craig) explain how fuel works this year. We have no refuelling, so the cars all start full. What happens in qualifying. Are they running with fumes in the tank and then filled up before the race. If so, then the grid will not really change for the rest of the year as far as I can see.

Matt

you got it in one.
There is the whole, starting the race on the tyre you set your fastest quali lap on. But as expected everyone did the same thing.
Where it gets interesting is, a new rule means, refueling must not take place any faster than 0.8 litres of fuel per second, and teams are not allowed to queue cars in the pitlane in quali. So on the shorter tracks, we might see someone missing out on a last second flying lap.

I heard also that those outside the top 10, will be allowed to start the race on new tires.

Any chance that could play into someone's strategy?

Sandbox a little, knowing you won't have to pit for a while longer?

Although it wouldn't make much sense trying to climb out of 11th or worse, just for the sake of a few laps.

But stranger things have happened.

Correct, They were worried at one point on commentary that no one would set a lap time so they could all just start on their tyre of choice, thus grid would have been set by q2. But they didn't.
It's simmilar to last year, if you dont expect to get higher than 10th you'd just fill your car up to fend off the guy in 11th. This year you'll probably see the slower top 10 guys not setting a time or even going out to cover the guys in 11th or 12th.

this is going to be a looong and probably boring season.
None of the front running drivers are willing to take a risk to pass in fear of damaging the tyres.
Race was ok, unlucky for Vettel really the race was his.
Good job by Schumi, very consistant, that right now is all that matters, and I am looking forward to what he does when he's settled.

Already talk of manditory 2nd pitstops. (what that'll do I have no idea)
Forcing teams to use a different set of tyres again,
Changing the compounds/ make up of the tyres to make them wear out quicker (as Whitmarsh said "had a safety car come out on lap 5, we all would have pitted for the harder tyres and run to the end on those with no issues")

The more they change things, the more they try to level the field, the more they try to standardise things, the worse it gets, and the more money it's costing everyone.
I really wish the FIA would leave things be. 2006/07/08 were all classic seasons, they all had overtaking, and the races in general were exciting bar a few exceptions.

As a secondary note from the weekend, as noted on BBC TV, Bernie has taken away the trackside passes of the drivers physio's. He claims the grid is already too packed for them to be there. The drivers have now set up protests by going off to their pit boxes till the last minute, until they get the passes back.

My question is, if its that busy, why is Rory Bremner (was it?) walking the grid taking the p*ss out of Jackie stewart, while someone important cant get on? Roll Eyes

How does the PORG have a say on who has a pit side pass. He has the entertainment rights. Who is pit side should be down to the FIA and the track owners in conjunction with elf and safety Huh

FOM control pit/paddock passes, no idea why. But Bernie argues it is up to the teams to allocate their grid passes to who they want including physio's. The teams/drivers argue that the team only get the amount they need for the team themselves.

As for Chandok, apparently they changed the rules this past year to allow non runners to qualify. Dangerous and stupid considering Chandoks first run in an F1 car was quali and his 4th lap was the first lap of a race. how that makes sense i dont know.
