With the renewed interest in Alaska, thought I'd blow up my little avatar so you could see the big ones from a seldom seen side.  I'm about sixty miles west northwest of Denali (left) and Foraker (right) on a westerly heading - destination Ophir.  For any airplane enthusiasts out there, that's a 1950 PA20 (Pacer) with an O320 Lyc - not a SuperCub by any means but it got me there  Smiley.                              ...

Excellent scenes in the background. During spring thaw.. how did you know when to take the skis off? Being the ground is only partially snow covered and one strip may not be the same ground cover as your destination. I don't see wheels sistered to the skis.   Smiley

Very nice... I'd almost rather have a good high-hp Pacer, with skis and droop tips, than a Super Cub.  Cool

Some unusually nice weather in that shot, too... that must have been a good flight.  Smiley

Usually your home field determined when you were done unless you had an alternate tiedown on a local lake.  Wheelski's were, of course, the best - if weight wasn't a problem.  Over the years, I had the rear seats in very few times so that big hole in back made me 'the freighter'.  Having wheelski's on would have meant fewer cases of beverage - a critical choice.

Droop tips, other than increasing span not quite a rib width, are a liability - visibility wise - forces you to rock the wing that much more to see what's out there.  But they do look sexy  Cheesy.  Believe it or not, a 150 Pacer outgrosses a 150 Cub but it doesn't get off nearly as quickly nor does it slow up as handily for landing.  If you invest in a few addons (payware) - 82 inch prop and Cub tailfeathers, as I did, it becomes quite a bit more useful.  It was probably around -30F on the ground that day and visibility about infinity.

I think it's a beautiful bird. And the shot really shows off the scenery.  Smiley

If God intended aircraft engines to have horizontally opposed engines, Pratt and Whitney would have made them that way.

If a Pacer was available for FSX, Mr Patchz the Painter, I'd be snivelling and grovelling as we speak.
