They were controlled fires for something to do with farming

Range fires are to replenish the soil for grazing later in the year.  They usually do it here in Kansas in the Flint Hills around April or May.  Driving from Wichita to KC the visibility can be near zero at times, and they have to issue permits to the ranchers so everyone doesn't do it at once and create an air hazard.

It does create an interesting landscape afterwards with patches of burnt/unburnt land across rolling hills for miles.  I'll have to drive/fly out there and take some shots, its beautiful.

Not a tree or hedge in sight!.... Shocked....!

I'm always amazed at the mathematical grid-like layout of the North American countryside. Completely different to the random layout of our English countryside, bordered by hedges and trees!

Paul.

yes it's very grid-like here, especially that section. there really are no trees out there, it's all farm land.

fires don't burn like that naturally... they are controlled fires by farmers to get ride of old, bad soil and refertilize quickly.

..there must have been trees (woods/forests) there at sometime, Sub?

Have they all been stripped away to make open Farmland?...(Dust bowl!).... Shocked...!

Paul... Wink...!

Paul, there are a few areas that contain trees out there. I've driven the width of Florida at this latitude from East-West and vice-versa, and have seen areas with trees that were not farmland. There are many trees out here in the city area.

Out in the Everglades area there are plenty of bushes and swamps... that's all it is.

That farmland could have also been swampland back then... I'm really not sure Undecided
