Don't know alot about canon's point and shoot line but I can attest to the quality of Nikon's range of p/s cameras. I had a coolpix a few years ago and I enjoyed the high quality of photos. As a matter of fact I came to enjoy taking photos so much that I purchased my canon dslr afterwards and became a photonut

The sensor in the G10 is especially good. It's the same as that used in the DSLR's.
Have you looked at the cross-overs? The SX20 and SX1 are very nice DSLR-like cameras. I have the SX10 that was replaced by the SX20 I think.
It's a lot of camera for the money, but still is not as good as an A-1 film camera.
