How come, on generally older games, you tend to get this polygon sort of look if you're panning near the sun?

Are you talking about a lens flare?

I believe it is typically in older games just to be an impressive feature. Through the development of games everyone was trying new things... So a lot of games had lens flare. Basically, if a new effect came out, everyone would try to encorporate it. If that didn't happen, games would still look like Pong. More recently, the effect has been improved and bloom seems to have taken over a bit. They've realised what is more realistic (as lens flare doesn't really happen through your eyes, but rather through things such as camera lenses)

Atleast, that is my thoughts about it, but I'm not entirely sure what you are referring to. My guess is just trying to keep up to date, at the time, and using the effects available.

Ah that makes sense.
This picture made me think about it. And I've seen it on a few computer simulations. http://205.252.250.26/cgi-bin/yabb2/YaBB.pl?num=1260224208
