A quick Google shows tuners getting up to 500 bhp out of it.

Components are a big factor in power output. A big turbo with stock internals will yield you some broken rods most likely. But a built 16v handles boost very well and can make some very good power when done right. My advice would be not to go cheap.
You gonna have a project on your hands? I'd like to see it as I want a MKII 16v GTI with dual rounds.
My specs... A hard drive, motherboard, graphics card, some memory, a keyboard, mouse, and monitor - in other words, nothing special.

ahh Rob, I was waiting for your answer
We (me, two mechanical engineers, and another electrical engineer) is planning a kitkar, but the initial idea was to use a Kawasaki ZX14 engine and transmission, and keep the car under 500kg, but the problem comes in with the reverse. The other option is to get sequencial gearbox, use a 2.0 VW 16v turbocharged motor, and make the body a bit larger. The motor will be mid- mounted for better C of G
This shot is at a very early stage. I design the body in Gmax, and then export to some files, at the end to use in Autodesk Inventor for the rest of the design and analysis.

Why not a Saab engine? 2.0L inline from a 1990s 9000 does 500+hp and lives to tell the tale 200.000 km further
Russian planes:
IL-76 (all standard length ones)

Tu-154 and Il-62

If you are going with a VAG engine, the 1.8T 20v is a better option.

For some reason I was thinking an old 16v motor with a turbo added on. Completely overlooked the newer MK5 and 6's with the 2.0 16vT. The new 2.0t's are quite tuner friendly, with a simple ecu reflash adding around 40+ hp. Big power will still require that you build the engine (rods, pistons, etc...) in order to handle the power.
VVM has a good point, the 1.8t is very, very well established, and most everything that can be done, has been done to them. My GTI has the 1.8t, and I love every bit of it! Well, aside from that pesky PLASTIC water pump impeller!
My specs... A hard drive, motherboard, graphics card, some memory, a keyboard, mouse, and monitor - in other words, nothing special.
