...And it probably didn't help that there was a 30-40 knot crosswind...

I would at that point initiate a go-around, retract the gear, get some altitude, then figure out a smoother way to get it down.

Hmm...according to the books, it is probably the best option. But maybe there was a cute flight attendant on board and the captain wanted to impress her......
