Recently I have been thinking of building a PC to move away from my Pentium 4 build. Problem though is budget, I'm 15 so its going to be about £300 give or take a bit. But here is my current idea:
  • AMD Athlon II X4 620 (about £65)
  • ASROCK M3A770DE AM3 socket motherboard (about £55)
  • Some cheap DDR3 memory, for now (about £40)
  • NVidia GeForce 8600GTS (about £55)
  • WD Caviar Blue 320 GB (about £30)
  • Case, drives etc. (about £50)

Even this takes me to £295, and I'm sure other things will take me over. An important question ism is DDR3 worth it, or just save some money and get more DDR2 memory and a cheaper motherboard? Please give me some advice on this! Undecided

My specs:
Dell Dimension 2400
2.66GHz Pentium 4
NVIDIA GeForce 6200 256mb
1gb DDR memory
80gb Seagate hard drive

If you're interested I'm selling THIS for £300, monitor and speaker system included.

I'll even throw in a Logitech wireless keyboard and mouse.  Wink

2 things:
  • I don't have the money at the moment...  Embarrassed
  • I was really thinking of building my own system for the experience and knowledge, as it would help in college next year.

I also fancied a quad core system, but the Core 2 Duos are so quick! Tough decision. Sorry CD., maybe if its for sale still when I have the money I will buy it!  Grin

Your specs:
Dell Dimension 2400
2.66GHz Pentium 4
NVIDIA GeForce 6200 256mb
1gb DDR memory
80gb Seagate hard drive

Actually...to save loadsa money...

To run FS 2004 only...I would just upgrade the Video card to a nVidia 7800GS. 256MB.
Pop in another Gig of Memory....(To make 2 GB).
...and that should do the trick!... Kiss...!

....(My ancient AMD 2600+ (2.1 Ghz) Socket A Processor, and AGP nVidia 78000GS 256 MB Card runs it fine, flat-out!).

(Check your Power Supply Wattage..Wink...)..!

Paul...G-BPLF...FS 2004....Win XP Pro... Cool...!

Dazzle: If you go with a Socket 775, it might just save you a good few, and some newer 775 motherboards can use DDR3 RAM. But, most likely the CPU wouldn't be able to match what you want. Still, I think it would be a good thought.

Hello ba... Wink...!

My FS 2004 is an absolute joy to fly with my (ancient?) Computer system...(It will even run FSX SP2 with slightly reduced Autogen).

I don't do any "tweaking/overclocking, etc" to my Hardware, (a recipe for disaster!), or FS 2004 Software.

I have all my FS 2004 sliders maxed, and all the boxes ticked, and with my Frame Rated locked at 20 FPS, I obtain a "smooth" flight at 19 FPS in most places flying at low levels... Kiss...!

My Trusty AMD 2600+ Thoroughbred Socket A Processor running at 2.1 GHz copes admirably with the Sim (and most games), and the upgrade from an AGP nVidia 6600GT O/C 128 AGP Card to my present AGP nVidia 7800GS 256 Card made the biggest difference to my "Smoothness", speed,  and object detail... Smiley...!

(Note my Motherboard is still the "old" AGP type, with a Socket A Processor).

I have LOTS of my own designed LAGO FSE and Abacus Ez-Scenery Scenery add-ons, installed, plus 3rd. Party free Scenery add-ons, and my system copes smoothly with little or no problems!

I am forever amazed at how even the most basic of Computer systems can run FS 2004!

At the moment I have little need to upgrade my present system, at additional expense!

I think FS 2004 relies more on the Graphics Card (and Memory), and FSX relies more on the Processor for good results... Wink...!

I would quite happily shove in a new GPU, but the problem lies in that my motherboard only supports PCI. So its a near impossible task. TBH, I want to build a PC to see how good my problem solving is too, something is inevitably going to go wrong!

The only thing im thinking now is to get or a 8800 gt or the 8800 gtx ($ is also short), and get a unicore 3.6 ghz (since fs9 dont use the dual), i guess i will have better results than the dual at 2.8 ghz.

What you guys think?

I use lots of pmdg and level d and much more scenery from aerosoft and AI.

By the way is anybody using world of AI?Recently i made a fresh instal of fs9.And now i want to instal some AI and the program tells me that i already have them , and ask me if i want to repair what i have installed (i remember that this is a new instalation, no old files or cfg), and when i repair the AI is active  Cheesy

Many thanks to all Wink Smiley

Blimey Dazz!...

I didn't realise your Motherboard was so old...with just "PCI"  and "ISA"slots!.... Shocked...!

My Motherboard is still slightly "old" with PCI slots, and an AGP slot for the Graphics Card.
The latest Motherboards are fitted with PCIe slots, which for me, would mean throwing everything away and starting all over again!.... Cry...!
But my present set-up works OK with my FS 2004 (and FSX)... Smiley...!
