Well, I have used PSP7 for quite some time and know my way around it. I read the repaint tutorial mentioned in the sticky above. I downloaded the C172 blank skin and made my first attempt to do a repaint. Well, long story short ... I suck. LOL

I used to fly, for real. I nice C172I. My instructor, and family friend, has since passed away and I wanted to do a repaint of his plane. Sadly I can't get lines straight or make it look decent.

I was wondering if I could impose upon the masterful talents of someone here. If I emailed a picture, could someone do me a repaint? I might be willing to pay for it. Wink

I'd gladly do it for free if you emailed a pic to me.

I have both FS2002 and FS2004 CoF.  The aircraft is a red and white C172I from around 1972 with the wheel fairings. The standard 172 skin would work, I just can't get any straight lines after it's applied in the game. I suppose if I had one of the fancy programs for FS skins I could but I don't have the money to spend on a new program. I need to get my photo scanned then I can email it.

Give me a couple days, since it's Thanksgiving today.

Thanks for the response.

Marcus

No problem, I only have FSX, so can you use an add-on C172 instead of the default one?

I'm not familiar enough with the games to know if there is a compatibility issue between the games. I don't mind if the wheel fairings aren't there, but I would only need a skin, not a whole aircraft file. This site has the blank skins for the default 172. I just couldn't make straight lines come out.

I just found the same paint scheme online. This plane has a different tail number and no wheel fairings but it's the exact same paint scheme. This is not my pic, sorry about the size. The tail number is different but you wouldn't need to put that on as I can put in the aircraft.cfg file that the tail number be white instead of black. The second pic has the same style and the fairings, but a darker color. The plane I flew has the same color as the first pic.

...

More of the second one.

I have a program called "FSrepaint" I use for checking alignment of the textures and various other things. It needs the model to work, so do you know of any freeware FS2004 C172s? There should be no compatibility issues.

A couple of points.

The free trial version of FSRepaint will allow you to view the repainted textures on the aircraft visual model. You can use it to line up those awkward joints. Download link at bottom of this page. http://www.abacuspub.com/repaint2/rpgallery.htm

You would need to use the default aircraft for that to work. I suggest the C172 Blank Textures by Mark Rooks posted here. http://www.simviation.com/fs_paintkits3.htm

This is the FS9 default aircraft less panel & sound. If Raptor wants to have a go it should work in FSX.

I got the 2004 blank skin from this site, but when you take a 3D curved surface and flatten it out, then draw a straight line on it then recurve it, the line is no longer straight. I also had a problem with one area with the blank skin in that after doing up the horizontal stabs, the left one on the inboard edgeof the elevator between it and the rudder wasn't painted. I eventually found the area on the page that handled that but it also appears the same spot for the side edges of the flaps. Then when I drew a straight line down the fuselage I discovered that once rendered in game it curved.

I would do a little at a time, then adjust the color depth and save it in the texture folder and check it out in the game. After several hours of back and fourth I gave up trying to get a straight line.

I realise the problems with repainting default aircraft. Some of the textures are mirrored so accurate paint schemes might not be possible.

I was just pointing out that the free Demo version of FSRepaint would save you a lot of time as you can reload the aircraft you're working on every time you change the textures to see what it looks like. It will also create a new variation of the aircraft for you without having to mess around creating new Texture folders or editing Aircraft.cfg.

I went ahead and DL that thing. It's a quicker way to view, but I was hoping for something that could take the skin, put it on the 3D model and let you paint it that way. Of course, I don't have the money for anything anyway, LOL. Embarrassed

Well, it looks like I may be getting this done on my own. That FSrepaint program is really helping me align things. It's a bit of a pain, especially having to create a curved line in order to have a straight line. Shocked

I have run into one problem. Putting the logo (name) on the vertical stab. It's right on my skin, but rendered it's right on the left but backward on the right side. Angry

I have discovered a new issue. When the engine is off, the prop cone is red, like it should be, but when running there is a white band in the middle of the blades.

Here is what I have done...

...

If you want it, let me know.

cheers,
Joe

Edited:
I have not added the tail logo yet. If you want it I can, however it will be reverse on one side. No way around that.

Ok, here's what I've done. I was wondering if the prop cone can be fixed?

(photobucket links like to put in ? and other code that this site can't understand. Got it fixed.)

I've smoothed out my lines, so they don't look as blocky.

Here is a shot taken in the sim. Note the prop spinner, custom seats and reg number.

...

This shot shows you where the prop spinner gets it's texture while spinning.
...

Still not perfect, but getting there.

cheers,
Joe

Thanks for the tip there. I got mine fixed up and I'm happy with it. Thanks for all the help guys. I even changed the appearance of the pilots. Since I have a full beard and mustache I edited one to have that. The other person with the blue coat I changed to white because my friend always wore a white wind breaker. I just found out today that N8349L had been totaled by who ever got it after he died. I'll have to have my mom tell me all about it. Angry

So here's my final edit job. Can you change the style of the tail number? Like make it bold or italicized?

That's really excellent. I'm glad I persuaded you to have a go at it yourself. Cool
