Simviation Airshow 2009 (Read 7221 times)
Nov 18th, 2009 at 1:34pm
SeanTK   Ex Member

Multiplayer aficionados,

I am thinking about trying to organize a new SimV Airshow for either the upcoming week (Thanksgiving in the US) or around Christmas/New Year.

Besides settling on a date and time, we would need to:

-set a nice location preferably with nice addon scenery that works in both FS2004 and X.
-get a list of performers
-get a list of non-performing spectators
-an idea for a "spectator aircraft"
-a list performing addon aircraft that work fine in both sims, even if an easy mod is needed.
-cameraman/screenshot person
-possibly an announcer on Teamspeak
-Rules and regulations for the airshow event

If people are interested in either participating or spectating, post here with your intentions and any preferences that you have (date, time, plane, etc.)

UPDATE:
Time: 3:30 PM US Eastern
Date: (Not confirmed) Either Dec 27, or Dec 29 2009
Location: Edwards AFB, United States

Spectator Aircraft: "Paper Airplane" model

Airshow Participants: Will be posted soon. Check current thread pages for latest news.

I would be interested in taking part in this airshow, ensuring the dates are right.

I am an FSX pilot. Earlier I was doing some airshow style runs in the default Extra 300 but with the blue 'Blades' design.

The deckchair was a great spectator 'aircraft'. Maybe someone could make something similar for the next one?

I am usually free on weekends, any decent GMT times.

It might be a good idea to post a link to the download for the aircraft you are going to be flying.

For example:
"I'm going to be flying the Boeing P8A Poseidon."
http://www.simviation.com/simviation/?type=item&ID=86&page=10
(I'm not really going to be flying that though.)

Sounds cool. May I suggest that say 5 suggestions being made for a date. That date can be voted for then (not a poll, you get asses that vote on a poll for fun) After the date has been established, the time can be established the same way?

As, in the past, it is essential that the Organiser of the Show decides, and sticks rigidly, to the time and place of the Show to prevent endless, never-ending, discussions/arguments over alternative Times and Places, and rearrangements of the schedule!

...otherwise it becomes a disaster!... Wink...!

Pick a Time and a Place...and stick to it!... Wink...!

The RULES are simple... Smiley...!

Paul....G-BPLF...FS 2004...FS Nav...and a low polygon, spectator, Paper Aeroplane.... Cool....!

OK, I'll just toss these random dates out. All time would either be at 2pm US Eastern or 4pm.

Possible dates:
Friday, Nov 27
Saturday, Nov 28
Sunday, Dec 27
Monday, Dec 28
Tuesday, Dec 29

If planning on attending and performing, please post a link to your aircraft (remember that it must work in both sims), along with any repaints that you will use. We'll settle on a spectator aircraft shortly.

Note to FSX users, you'll probably have to operate during the show with bloom turned off.

Possible locations are still up for grabs.

I would suggest somewhere like Edwards.

Nice & open, and it lines up well for both sims online.

Also check this out, Jake has done a very solid job of this before, and it would make a nice template for this.

And following this thread needs to be a non-optional requirement, or this could fall apart fast.

I should be free for any of those dates. 2pm eastern is about 7pm GMT, I think. This should be fine. Especially on a weekend, I will be free then.

My aircraft:
Default Extra 300
Paintjob: The Barclays Blue design. 2008 Livery pack

I am unsure if this runs on FS9, however. I do not currently have a way of testing.

The low Polygon Paper Aeroplane for sitting on the Taxiway for the Spectators to watch the Display....and your name appears above it...
...it does not hog the Bandwidth...or make a noise!

Paper Aeroplane...>>>

http://www.simviation.com/fs2004misc5.htm

Any one not immediately appearing in the Display is encouraged to change to the Paper Aeroplane when on the ground.

I'd be well up for this. I;d suggest the december dates just so we can get things organised with plenty on time....the others are less than 2 weeks away  Shocked

If I can make the arranged date you can sign me up provisionally for my traditional default extra 300 display, a Typhoon display and possibly the vBBMF could be resurrected (including the glorious return of XH558 Tongue )

I'd go FS9 just to get minimum stuttering (FSX still runs a bit jumpy if there's lots of aircraft about, even on i7 with GTX 285 Tongue)

I could custom build an airport for the show if you want. Just tell me where to put it. It will go much faster the the SimV Neighborhoods because I won't be learning every step of the way. And with the new ADE9X, and can make an FSX and FS9 Version. Just an idea.

Also, if you need someone to schedule events, etc, I could do that.

Cool

I'll put all of these details in a nicer, easier to read format once everything is ironed out, but just for now read all of the following.

I think we'll go with Edwards AFB in the US if that is ok with everyone.

At this point in time we'll scratch the November dates and just focus on the December ones. Time is not definite yet, but will probably be 2pm US Eastern.

The "paper airplane" sounds like a good choice for a spectator aircraft.

For performing aircraft, those of you that want to use the default Extra 300 may want to take a look at the FFS one here in the SimV library. That way people with both sims see the exact same thing.

Performances will go one at a time unless there is a team/formation display.

If a user would rather prep for the performance instead of sit and watch others before they are on, they can use and circle north of Edwards AF Auxiliary North Base. This is not suggested, but I'll leave the option open for convenience.

I'm sure everyone here will be courteous, but just as a general rule, no being disruptive while the airshow is running or you'll be warned once, then booted.

When choosing your planes to use, remember that we have users from both FS2004 and FSX attending.

If anybody wishes to act in an announcer capacity on Teamspeak, say so.

NOTE: READ THE STICKIED TOPICS AT THE TOP OF THIS MULTIPLAYER FORUM SO YOUR PORTS ARE SET CORRECTLY!

http://205.252.250.26/cgi-bin/yabb2/YaBB.pl?num=1243892329
http://205.252.250.26/cgi-bin/yabb2/YaBB.pl?num=1148901173

Beyond regarding the above, I would like participants to post all necessary links to their aircraft AND links to any repaints that they will be using. Of course this means that any addon aircraft used must be FREEWARE.
Participants should specify what they intend on doing with their aircraft during the show.
Participants should specify how long they wish to perform, and I will work out an average time that each person has the stage once I get a general idea of how long people want to go. (Example: average ends up meaning that everyone is on stage for 3 minutes each or something.)

Unless there is a major real world event or technical difficulties that make it hard for the majority of people to show up, the event will NOT be rescheduled after the final date and time is decided.

Other notes:
Weather settings: clear skies, zero wind, at least 10 miles visibility.

Simviation server.

Chat box and Teamspeak will be available. Try to refrain from communicating while a performer is performing.

I suggest using FSRecorder for monitoring this performance with maximum viewing angle flexibility.

I think that the spectator airplane should just be default. Like the Cessna 172. One less download.  Smiley

And I am trying to figure out what aircraft I will fly. I am thinking about the Sikorsky S-51 I have. I got the source files that I can export for FSX, which is way better than the FS2002 model. It will be this helicopter, or I will use the FSX Bell 47 or Nemeth FS2004 MD 500E. Which ever I use will have a special paint job just for the airshow.

Remember that the "Paper Aeroplane" doesn't make any annoying noises when it is parked....and its low polygon count doesn't hog the Multiplayer Bandwidth, slowing everything down,  and also eliminates any possible "Stutter and Judder" in the screen display, especially for low specification computers....and Dial-up Users.... Turn down the autogen.  Are you there to watch planes, or buildings and trees?  Cheesy  Wink

Other than the buildings, it's several thousand acres of empty desert, nothing to block the view, and they both line up in both sims.

That is the single most important factor when mixing FSX & FS9 online for an airshow.  If the airfields don't line up well, it will be downhill from there.

If we don't use Edwards, we do need to pick somewhere in relatively flat, open, featureless terrain, that will line up in both sims.

Maybe on an Island somewhere?  Johnson Atoll would be a good one.

Dobbins AFB (KMGE) doesn't have that many objects, even with the scenery pack I downloaded here on simv.

I might enter, depending what aircraft i can find that works on both.
Are we allowed to edit our cfg files to increase performance on our planes like the real air show pilots do ? Smiley

EDIT and does the Bingio FSX package show as the bingo fs2004 package?

If this was December date, I would try to make this. I would most likely get FSX in a combo with my computer parts I hope to get. SO hopefully I will have my custom PC, have good graphics and be able to change my settings to play with you guys. If this happens, I would be on the "Maybe" list.

2pm Eastern is 6am here in Australia, might not make it. However 4pm Eastern is 8am which isn't as bad, which were you planning on using? Undecided

Would love to make an appearence and possibly do a display in a Sabre, Section F8 works in both sims. Smiley

Oh and mind telling me how fs2004 and fsx connect together? I know its on the site, just can't seem to find it(i looked at the links and have the fshost downloaded). Roll Eyes

EDIT- I connected to the server, but no option to do anything but chat?

FS2004 has a nice, trouble free built in Multiplayer function.  All we do is enter the server IP and connect.

What FShost does, is fool FSX into thinking it's FS9, and allows it to connect in the same way FS9 does.

But even with FSX, you still have to make sure your ports are open.

SO......

FIRST, and most important, EVERYONE who plans to attend, must read & follow this thread, EXACTLY, or you will have connection problems, as well as causing a connection problem for others. Wink

Anyone suspected of not having opened their ports correctly will be kicked from the session.  There's no sense in spoiling everyone's fun, for not having done such an easy task.

When that is done, To join the server in FSX, do the following:

-Before you start FSX, click the FSHostClient.exe

...

-This will pop up:

In the IP address window, enter: fs.netfrag.org like I did, and click 'Search IP for sessions'

...

-When it finds SimV's server, click Connect at the bottom. The chat window will pop up. Wink

...

...

Now, start FSX in Windowed mode, and leave it that way.

Set AI traffic to 0%  and lock frames to 20 and you should be good  to go.

My guaranteed, problem-free, every-day set-up for Flight Sim Mulltiplayer.....

FS 2004....ADSL external USB Wired Modem with no Router...single direct connection to the 'Phone line....all Ports automatically Forwarded upon connection.... Smiley...!

I know many Folks have to use a Router for one reason or another, but my single User Computer doesn't need one, so I don't have any Port Problems/Conflicts with my direct connection to the Internet via a simple, low-cost ADSL Wired Modem.... Smiley...!

The "Port Test" always checks every one, and reports; all ports "OK".

Good question.......

How long do you guys want to be performing? I was thinking something around 3 minutes each or so, but I really have no idea what is suitable.

I think 3-5 minutes per, should have a limit so no one goes over board. And are you going to be having people take off and get to a good altitude before they preform I.e if Player 1 is preforming, and 2 is next, will 2 go ahead and take off to get alt. or maybe let that be something a player can request?
Because certain aircraft take a while to get to a good, safe alttitude

EDIT and might I suggest you edit the first thread every now and then with confirmed preformers with the links to the planes so someone just entering doesn't have to go through every page

I will be using either the Fouga Magister or the Fouga Zephyr jet trainer, by the Restauravia Team.
I am not yet sure whether I will use FS2004 or X. (Probably 2004.)

everyone, my vote for the date of the airshow goes for Sunday, Dec 27. More people would be able to attend on a weekend rather than Tuesday.

Should we be using some specific addon scenery. I know (at least in FS9) there are no parking spaces, so we'll need to start on a runway and move to another spot if we are spectators. I can add special parking to the default FSX and FS9 airports if you want. I just need to know how many people there are and where they should go.

Cool

The Organiser of the Show normally provides a Map of the Airfield, outlining the Active Runway, the start and finish end or the Runway, and the Area to be occupied by the Spectators, in colour.

I will preform in a modified RV-4 from Van
http://www.simviation.com/simviation/?ID=84&page=14&mark=5562

http://www.simviation.com/simviation/download.php?ID=5562

plus i cannot get the paper airplane to show up :| it is in the right spot
...

and i agree with B-Valvs, there are no parking spaces, so we would all have to start on the runway..
and if we do use addon on, we should asign parking spaces determined by performance time for example
First performer, Parking space 1, second, 2 etc etc

Make sure the "aircraft.cfg" has the .cfg at the end, it looks like it is just "aircraft" at the moment.

Here is what default FS2004 KEDW looks like.
I quickly drew out the general plan.

Green Dot = Show Center
Red = Spectator Area
Yellow = Active Runway
Blue = Ground travel path for performing aircraft. Note the runup area. It will serve as a very short term waiting area for the next performer to get ready for takeoff.
Also note the blue arrows, showing suggested routes for runway entrance and exit for performing aircraft.

B-valves, if you could make about a dozen spots in the red area for this field, it would be appreciated.

...

Taxiway A is the one on the far left, next to the runup area, and will serve as the designated taxiway for all departing aircraft.

Taxiways B and C are located centrally and at the far end respectively and will only be used for arriving aircraft going into the spectator zone.

Exiting the runway at taxiway B is preferred.

The active runway is runway 4.

Click the Apply to All Folders button, then OK.

This is for your convenience & will not affect the aircraft in any way. I see your paperairplane has no Panel folder. That's the reason it won't display on the FSX aircraft selection menu. To fix it paste a copy of the Panel folder from any of your flyable aircraft into the paperairplane folder. It will be listed under Mead as manufacturer. To finish the job pop a small screenshot of the aircraft named thumbnail.jpg into the Texture folder.

I always have my "Show Hidden Files" box ticked....

...but many of my files with "long names" only show up completely after clicking once on the file to highlight it...(some of the text, etc is hidden).

I think it conserves space associated with the Icon, by condensing the text under it.... Roll Eyes...!

Particularly noticeable on File Icons with long names on the Desktop.... Smiley...!

Again that will depend on your View options. Try double-clicking in a clear space in the window & select View/List from the drop-down menu. Experiment with the other options.

This is the Tiles option.

Wondering: Since we can only use FS2004 planes, what about textures. For example, I have the free REX grass, jetways and roads, should we put the default textures back?

Global textures shouldn't matter. You can keep what you have installed. Just aircraft compatibility and repaints are what matters here.

Remember if you install 3rd Party Aircraft textures from "other" sources and apply them to your Aircraft, they wont appear to other Pilots...
..the same goes for certain "Effects"...they wont appear in Multiplayer...

In actual fact, the only Aircraft, Scenery, etc which is sure to appear to EVERYONE in Multiplayer, is the "Default" set!....its the way Uncle Bill designed it!..... Wink...!

...(Which is why I mostly use my Default Beech Baron 58 in Multiplayer....everyone has it, and everyone can see it!)

Ok, so far we are on still on track for the 27th. I'll get a performer roster up sometime over the weekend.

I'm going to be displaying in Rick Piper's Bristol Sycamore helicopter, rather than the Magister.

I think B-Valvs is working on the AFCAD, and other than that, we are pretty much set for a small show. I'm hoping that I won't be working on that day!

Hope thats ok with everyone. The show for any fellow East Coast Australians is on Monday 28th at 7.30am. Wink

IMPORTANT NOTES:

Sunday, December 27: 3:30PM US Eastern. Default Edwards Air Force Base, California.

All performers are allowed a maximum of two performance aircraft. On the day of the performance, each person will go in their order, then those people with a second plane will go up for their second performance, in the same user order, skipping anyone that only wants to go once.

Performers, please have all download links to your aircraft + liveries established here no later than three days prior to the event.

Unconfirmed guests, please specify if there is a likely chance that you will be showing up at least three days prior to the event. If you wish to perform, then post all links at least three days prior to the event.

Cancellations:
We all know that "real life happens". So, if you can't show up and know ahead of time, please post here, even if it is only a day in advance if you are able, simply for our planning convenience.

If something comes up suddenly that prevents you from informing us, don't worry, that is understandable! We'll just modify the show routine if necessary.

Narration:
If there is majority interest, then we could log in to Teamspeak, and listen to a designated announcer while the show goes on. If we determine that this is desired, if there is anyone that wants to do announcing duties, let us know!
Announcer: Must be able to read and speak English in a clear, comprehensible, and for the case of narration, lively, manner.

Current update time December 17, shortly after 10:30pm Eastern.

--->We need to determine a show order. I really could care less who goes first and last, but it would be good to do this so we don't have a massive pileup on the hold short line, and people can sit in the viewing area knowing they won't miss out on their performance and that they have an allotted time.

--->Are we using Teamspeak for this event?

--->Will there be routines involving multiple members in the air at once?

--->I am aware of one fly-in. (Member not appearing immediately at Edwards AFB.) Any others?

--->Keeping the previous two points in mind, we need to set a "stage-time" for each performance. I was thinking 4 minutes max, but am unsure if this would interfere with anyone's routines.

Also, I am unsure of how many people we could get if everyone is able to show up, since I have that list of thread participants that did not indicate a likely intention of doing so. I think B-Valvs is making 15-20 parking spaces, which should be plenty, but some arrival guidelines should probably be set, and I propose the following:

--All arrivals (performers + spectators) minus the known performance fly-in should be parked at the airfield at least 10 minutes prior to the event start time.

--I'll try to get an attendance update in this thread the day of the performance if I can show up. This will consist of me indicating whether or not sufficient parking is available. (probably)
If for some reason we get a huge crowd and lack parking (highly doubtful), I need all newcomers to appear at Edwards Auxiliary North Airfield, and slew to the spectator area.

--If a performer is not present by the time their performance starts, then the schedule simply moves onto the next person. If the performer shows up later, they will be fit in either last or wherever space is available.

More show logistics:

-When a performer has 1 minute left, the next in line can taxi to the hold short line. With 30 seconds left, the next up can line up on the end of the runway. When the previous performer is on final approach for their end of performance landing, the next performer takes off, and can do one circuit or whatever is necessary until the previous performer clears the runway.

-Regarding the previous note. Each performer's clock starts when the runway is clear and they are lined up on short final to fly over show center.
Their clock ends when they are on short final for their final landing.
I'm not going to be a time-nazi about this, but I'm sure we would appreciate people sticking close to whatever the allotted time will be.

-Turn crash detection off.

NOTE: I encourage discussion on the show clock info. I am unsure of the best way to do this.

Finally, on a non-critical note.....
I am still unsure of my work schedule for this date, so ironically I may not even be able to show up to this event. I'll find out by the end of next week.

I don't want to blindly set rules for a lot of the above points because I am afraid of messing up people's performance plans, so I need some good input here on every aspect that I mentioned.

SeanTK, I decided to fly a Sikorsky S-55 instead of the S-51. Here is a link to the .exe download. I specially modified the helicopter for the airshow. When you install, there is an option to install the FS9 or FSX version depending on what sim you have. Both have the exact same names in the .cfg entry so that there should be no viewing trouble.  Wink

If I'm not too late, I'd like to announce my intentions to participate in this.

I would be flying the Kirk Olsson F86 Sabre in FS9.

http://www.simviation.com/cgi-bin/syb.cgi?section=military&file=sabrejet.zip

If the download is too big for anyone I will be switching to the K Ito model before selecting the above. This is a low res model if needed, but I urge you to get the Olsson F86 if possible, it's so much better!

Alrighty then...page 6 list updated. Looks like we've had a few dropouts, and I am seriously wondering about the overall turnout now.

For those that will attend, have fun!

Just out of curiosity, how many people would be able to do this at the same time on Tuesday the 29th?

You left out the most important part, and the main reason why some people probably weren't there. (as well as some other crucial info for FSX players trying to join.) Roll Eyes

The info for Joining the server, for opening ports, and anything else you may need to know, has been in the stickies on this board for quite a while now.

Everyone should read them a few times before trying to go online with FSHost, or else we'll have more of the same. Wink

I tried to join several times, but some one did not have their ports set up correctly, and it wouldn't let me on.

If just one person has their ports set incorrectly, it can ruin the whole thing for many others.  This is a well known problem with MSFS, and is totally preventable with a little effort.

I was the first one to show up at 7:30 PM GMT, (for the Show at 8:00 PM GMT), in my Paper Aeroplane, and I remained as a Spectator for the whole Show....and beyond....

I do not suffer from; "Port Problems", as I do not use a "Router" to connect to the Phone Line for Broadband Internet (and Multiplayer) use....just a simple ADSL USB wired "Modem"......

...and run the "FS Port Test" Program before each session.

Around an hour till the show.

I'll be using this:

Get the version for your sim, or if you want to be extra sure, load the FS9 version in your sim. Either 9 or X.

Learjet 45....

Its always nice flying Default Aircraft in Multiplayer...

It may be a bit boring... Roll Eyes..but at least everyone in the group can see the correct Planes they are all using!... Smiley...!

(One of the reasons why I mainly use my default Beech Baron 58 in Multiplayer....(it even has my own registration letters on it, tho' you cant see them... Wink...)....everyone can see the correct Aircraft I am using!).

Paul....G-BPLF...FS 2004....a C150 and a Baron!.... Grin...!
