Well, I am currently in the process of acquiring parts for my first PC build. Hopefully this one will last me a while too. It's a budget gamer, but it will pack a good punch.

~ Genmax 450w PSU w/ SATA and PCI E
~ Memorex 16x DVD +/- RW (and a bunch of other features) drive 
~ XFX 9600 GT Low Profile SLI ready 512 mb DDR3 Graphics card
~ Samsung Spinmaster 500 gb 16 mb cache HDD
~ EDIMAX EW-7728In 32bit PCI Wireless 802.11n Draft 2.0 PCI Card up to 300 mbps
~ OCZ Reaper HPC 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 1066 (PC2 8500) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory      
~ Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit
~ GIGABYTE GA-X48-DQ6 LGA 775 Intel X48 ATX Intel Motherboard
~ Intel Core 2 Duo E8400 Wolfdale 3.0GHz LGA 775 65W Dual-Core Processor 6 mb cache

I currently have the HDD, Case (though I will be getting a better one,) Gfx card, the CPU cooler (a much larger 3rd party one,) PSU, and my speakers which I am using from an old PC. The monitor will be a LG 20" LCD Widescreen. I might get another 2 gig stick of RAM later down the road.

All for about 900 bucks  Grin

I would go for a higher wattage PSU just to be sure.

I am thinking about possibly getting a 550 watt or so, but my friend has a set up actually more than mine, and he has 480w with watts to spare.

So you have NEVER built a system before?

There are many tips and methods for building a system... Look around for things like...

Avoiding static discharge...

How to attach a CPU heatsink fan...

How much Thermal paste to use...

How to install memory...

Which Sata HDD Power cord do I use. USE ONLY ONE!!!

I don't want to imply your incompetent, I just want to ensure you don't make the same errors I did.

ADDITIONALLY: Just food for thought...

Even though it's a gamer... I assume you'll be using it for more than just games?  The reason I ask is your HDD.  I'm only looking at the size/capacity. 500GB??? Do you plan on partitioning your drive with 2 or 3 partitions?

People say the bigger the better, but I have my own preferences and if you don't mind reading, I'll share them with you...

Having a single 500GB partition may seem appealing to most. It keeps everything in the same place. I find it amazing how unorganized peoples HDD are.

Over the years, I've tinkered with having 1 to 4 HDD's. I like to keep things organized and separate. Things like the Operating System... Applications and Utilities (More on that later)... Games... Data files... and Storage.

Having things separate, prevents you from loosing everything when disaster strikes (Except for catastrophic HDD failure).  Before I learned how to use multiple partitions, I used separate drives... one for the Operating System and Page Files, one for games, one for Apps/Utils and one for storage. Now I prefer two drives, double partitioned. For a while, I tinkered with RAID configs.

What's the difference between Applications and Utilities? In my mind... an "application" is a program that creates/produces a resulting file. Word, Excel, MSPaint...  A "utility" is a program which does not. Firefox, Calculator, SpeedFan.  I hate the way Windows piles everything into the same Program Files directory.  I also keep my created files with my storage stuff.

But all this is silly UNLESS you can tell the computer, where on the drive/partition to put the files.

THIS IS NOT AN ADVERTISEMENT: It is "food for thought"

I love Ultimate Defrag. This utility allows you to put the OS and GAMES on the faster tracks of your drive and the rest of the crap on the inner tracks.

My standard HDD Config is as follows...

HDD0: Part 1 - Windows
HDD0: Part 2 - Apps & Utils
HHD1: Part 1 - Games
HHD1: Part 2 - Storage
*Partition 1 on both drives will read data faster than on Partition 2.

I then tell UD to place the Windows directory... Users directory and Program Files directory and the PageFile on the faster tracks and everything else on the slower.

I also place FSX on the faster tracks and Delta Force on the slower.

Thanks. I have my uncle also who is gonna build it with me who was/sorta is an IT person and has so much computer stuff in his house it's not funny. lol But he is also very knowledgeable. And I am in constant talks with a friend who has also built a custom PC, which my specs are very close to his.

I'm looking at new PSU's right now.

I will for sure! And I have found a new PSU...

BFG Tech GS-550 550W ATX12V V2.2 / EPS12V V2.8 SLI Ready CrossFire Ready Power Supply

Copied right from Newegg. The only 5 Egg PSU within the price range of $25 - $50. I think 550W will be enough.

Newegg is where I shop too... And I've been told to get more memory instead of SLi... I'm looking into that... and a tech I spoke with in a store suggested 600W minimum for SLi. I'm looking into that also.

Yeah, that would make sense... my personal opinion though is it depends on the size of the gfx card if you are going to SLi. I'm only going to be using 1 XFX 9600GT 512mb DDR3, which will hopefully give me good fps in FS9 so I can have maxed out scenery and get those scenery add-ons and such. But it's also low profile so it uses less power.

And I just saw your food for thought.

I have the Adobe CS3 Master Suite, which I plan on using a lot. Though I won't use all the programs, those will eat up a lot of memory. I am an avid Photoshopper, and I want to get into website coding and movie editing too. I also have other Microsoft programs like Office 2003 Student edition, and other games. Plus I want to be able to have my iTunes on my PC too  Grin

i can confirm the minimum of 600 for sli (although I recommend NO LESS then 650 minimum to give a buffer)

I burnt out (an already shitty and slowly dieing PUS) that was a 500 and all I had was the mother board, the ram and CPU, and two video cards (optical drive was an external drive that had its own power system) and even with that oh and three HDDs i managed to burn out the PSU...sad but true...

why email just him? post your knowledge so every one can share in the wealth of Info...I will share any knowledge I have with people here my self too Wink anyways now I guess its time to figure out my PhysX card situation...
