A friend of mine as a Sergeant in the Air Force attended a combined forces training session.

The usual interforce rivalry came to the fore with the Army and Navy relegating the Air Force to a lesser role.

"Sir,"said my friend to the officer in charge of the course,"May I respond on behalf of the Air Force?"

"Certainly Sergeant. Go ahead."

"Well,Sir,it's like this. The Army has officers that send their men to be shot at. The Navy has officers that take their men in to battle with them and they all get shot at.

But the Air Force actually sends its officers into combat while the men remain behind.

I respectfully suggest that the Air Force is the senior service"

Many years ago in a previous life that involved a blue uniform, my employer decided that it had to have everyone fill out a service satisfaction questioner. One of the questions was, "Why did you join the RAF"? My wrote down, "Because it is only the officers that get shot at"..........Never did get any feedback from that survey Grin Grin

Having been an Air Force sergeant, I can attest that the officer-noncom role reversal is basically so. However, we weren't always that far behind and, when not crew-chiefing a Russian radar, or such, in training missions, we were assigned to combat-directing radar; in that role, we got to officially (but respectfully) tell our flying officers where to go.
