When you download, you should chose "save", not "open". You will then be asked by your computer where you want to save the .zip file. You can save it to your desktop, or you can save it in a self-made "download" folder, or anywhere you want to save it.
If you saved it to your desktop, you should right click on the folder, and choose "extract all", and it should unzip and open another folder (I think. I don't save to dsktop, I save to a download folder..)
At any rate, you should have a new folder on your desktop An folder with the aircraft in it, and usually a "readme" with installation instructions. The aricraft folder (usuall named after the aricraft, or some name that indicates what aircaraft it is) should contain at least four folders and two files. "Model", Panel", "Sound" and "Texture" folders and an "aircraft.cfg, and a "What-ever-it-is.air" file. There may be additional folders for sounds, gauges or effects.
If you saved it to a download folder, using Windows Explorer, find the .zip file, and right click, choose "extract all", and it will create a new folder and extract the contents of the .zip to that new folder. From there, you install as usual, folowing the installation instructions in the "readme".
My guess is that your missing aircraft are missing their .cfg file and .air file.
