I remember watching the aftermath of this on our Television at the time, especially the crushed cars sandwiched between the two tiers of the Motorway!
Never to be forgotten!

My unit, stationed at Fort Irwin, stood up and deployed to the area to secure federal facilities.  This freed up National Guard units for other duties.  I didnt go myself as I was so new I still squeaked when I walked.  Stayed on post and got to be the first to a murder scene...Lucky me.
