Well according to my local paper as a result of colgan 3407 necesary flight hours will most likely increase from 250 hours to 1500! What costs $100k will now cost nearly $300k to be a commercial pilot. Some of my local friends are already planning to protest this bill.

A 6X increase in hours, would be a 6X increase in cost. Making it a rich mans game and not worth pursueing to get your investment back in one lifetime. Using your example of $100,000, would actually increase to $600,000!
Flying with twins is a lot of fun..

I would question that source to find out the truth. If that is the NTSB recommendation, that doesn't mean the FAA will do it. Plus I highly doubt the hours just to get a commercial license will increase that much. Maybe an ATP, but not a simple commercial.

That does seem like a pretty big leap up. What's the backing on that idea?

This is to get into the airlines. Not just a simple single engine, commercial, I-can-fly-my-friend licence. Its for minimum regional licence

I saw a report somewhere that said the only thing that correlates to a change in accident statistics is when a pilot started flying, as in, the early the pilot started, the lower the chance of an accident. The report said that all other variables (total time, aircraft type, license type, age) did not correlate directly in the way that "starting to fly" did. I hope that made some sense.

Embry was mentioned in the article.
"Mica has been under preassure from Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University - a widly respected aviation school in his district - to ease the 1,500 hour requirement."

Honestly, 1500 hours used to not even get you an interview with the regionals. Most guys either built time flying charter, cargo, or military to get those hours. No one expected you to pay for the time yourself. Most guys I know paid for their commercial and multi, then found jobs flyin Barons, Senecas, or other twins for charter or cargo ops until they had enough time to get an interview.

I should add, even now you have to have at least 500 hours total and usually 100 hours multi to interview with a regional and have a shot at getting hired.
