i'm sure this has been addressed before, but i can't find....am planning to upgrade to a new computer and i assume that 64 bit is preferable...are there many addon aircraft which will not work here?......

also, was going to wait for windows-7 to come out cause i thought i read that it would be more like win-xp. now nick says no...vista with another name...

also was hoping to build a system close to what nick recommended above....i wonder  how much it would cost? and how long before the prices go down...any chance within the next 3 months you think?

I am running Vista 64 and have had no problems with FSX compatibility either with addons or aircraft. In fact I have not had any problems with any software I am running. I am running FSX on my laptop (Vista 64) and my desktop (Vista 32) and to my layman's eyes I can notice no difference.....................however, over to NickN Grin

I've been running various versions of XP, Vista, and 7 on several different computers and I've only ever run into one compatabilty problem, and that was with an old TV tuner.

People tend to be quick to assume a problem is Windows fault. Tongue

Since using Vista for several months, I have experienced no problems with adding aircraft. Further, as I stated in a previous post, comparisons have shown that there doesn't seem to be any difference in performance from going from XP to Vista. In reference to 64 bit, I chose it so I could get full use of my RAM.

I am not sure what Nick has recommended for a new build but here is my two cents. A motherboard and CPU that is easy to over-clock. I chose an i7 920 CPU and a ASUS P6T Deluxe MB. The CPU cooler I chose (Noctua NH-U12P) rated high on comparison tests. Then you need a high end video card, fast RAM, and plenty of power. See my configuration at the bottom of this post. How much does it cost? As Nick would say, "you get what you pay for". However, shop, shop, shop around and take your time in finding the best price for top of the line components. One example is buying my case retailed at almost $267.00 on sale for $100.00 or buying an i7 920 CPU on sale for $200,00.

It took me about three months to order and receive all components before I started putting them together. I then had to make a choice between buying an outgoing 64 bit XP OS or going with a 64 bit Vista Home Premium package. I chose Vista even though I had been brain washed over the years into thinking that Vista was bad. I now know that I was wrong. In my opinion, it offers more services with a better presence and if W7 is Vista with another name, I don't believe that is a bad thing. I base this comment on the fact that I now have two systems, an old and a new. I run XP on the old and Vista on the new.

Are the prices going down in three months? Who knows - maybe a little. The real savings are in the sales covering your pre-defined new PC.
