What OS would you use? (Read 1331 times)

I'm in the process of compiling a list of components for a new computer which I'll build myself (with some help).  Now that Windows 7 is officially released - or about to be - what OS would you use?  Vista Home Premium-64 is what I'd planned on using, but I hate to buy it when Windows 7 is the new standard.  Until Windows 7 SP1 is released I have some hesitantcy to use it due to potential bugs.  I don't think you can get an upgrade coupon when purchasing the OS for yourself which makes buying 2 OS's out of the question.  Thoughts?

My Specs:
i7 920 oc'd to 3.8
6gb Corsair RAM
ASUS P6T Deluxe v2,
EVGA 275GTX
1TB WD 7200/32 Black
2x 750GB WD 7200/32 Black
Samsung 22" 1680x1050 LCD
Corsair 800D case
Windows 7 64-bit

Go XP pro 64bit until the version of Windows 7 comes out that you are comfortable with.

I got my copy of XP pro for $20(US dollars) at a college book store. It came as a 2 disc set, one for 32bit, and one for 64bit.

For that $20, I can still feel good about moving to Windows 7 when I'm ready, and will be happy that I completely missed out on the Vista nightmares.

Nice but, what exactly are the vista nightmares? I've never had a problem.

I've tried using my dad's Vista computer, and I just can't seem to wrap my mind around it.  Every time I go to do something, it asks me if I'm sure, every step of the way.

Even the simple tasks are a pain.
There are still a lot of compatibility issues with most of the software I run. It may be old, but I still enjoy it. Wink
Not to mention it won't run on my existing hardware, but XP and 7 will. Tongue

Vista never offered anything attractive enough to me to make me want to switch.

The only reason I'm thinking of 7 is the rumored perfomance increase on older hardware over XP.  Now that's a reason to switch. Cool

I'm using a release candidate of Windows 7 Cheesy, I love it, build 7100, I'm not going to a newer build, my friends L4D crashes if he looks at the little add that says what server your on (GA, 3FL ect...)  Sad

But yes Windows 7 is very good, a comparison, On my dad's computer he has the same speed, and size and RAM as I do, whilst idling his RAM usage is 50% Shocked, Mine is 29%
Much difference there Cheesy Cheesy Cheesy

I will keep using my version of XP Pro for as long as possible. It's stable, fast, stripped of all unnecassary BS and it does what it has to do. I have no reason to upgrade to Vista or 7.

I just recently switched to Windows 7 when my new HDD came in, and I'm one to vouch for the performance increase over XP Pro x64. Moreover, the OS is very stable (even in RC version) and has yet to give me a single error or BSOD of any sort. However, there are some incompatibility issues with SOME software that I use, but as far as gaming and FS goes, HUGE performance increase Wink

Im a former Vista User 64 and 32bit. I just installed Windows 7 and there is not a hick-up. I primarily use FSX and everything works awesome on it. As a matter of fact Im getting better performace with Windows 7.

The main difference between Vista and Windows 7 is that it does not hog your computer down. It boots up faster and applications run quicker and smoother.

You can use vista and I have no reason why you shouldnt....but windows 7 is the way to go and things will only get better as time progresses.

On Windows 7 the only slight issue that I have seen is that Adobe flash player is only compatible for 32 bit systems currently, BUT if your using a 64 bit version there is an option to use the 32bit player and it works just fine.

I like to keep up with the current trend for OS's. Windows 7 is really full of additional user ease features as advertised on TV.

I have been thinking about getting either XP 64bit or 7. It's still very tough decision, because both OS's are from what I hear great.

XP is older, but the most trustworthy. But from what I hear about 7, it has the looks of Vista with the reliability of XP. But it uses .5 of a gig of more RAM. And I'm getting 4 gigs of 1066 DDR2 to start. So thats already 2 gigs gone. But again, I can usually have open Photoshop, Firefox, and Xfire all open at once with only 2 gigs of 800.

Enough of my story, I am still in this limbo, but I think an Intel Core 2 Duo 3.0 6mb cache and a XFX 9600gt 512mb DDR3 gfx card, and 4 gigs of Patriot G series 1066 mhz RAM, Windows 7 would work for me.

i use both XP pro (32-bit Sad) and 7 not sure if its 32-bit or 64...need to figure it out...I plan on keeping XP pro on my FS machine till im more comfortable with 7 but I do have 7 loaded up on my laptop (toshiba with Solid State Drive) and 7 seems to run pretty smooth, so I dont know...still kinda hesitent about 7 untill I have used it for a bit and really sure its stable...so thats where i stand for now...and vista was on the laptop for awhile and it was rather stable but the UAC thing was a PITA...but 7 has that to some degree but still you can turn it off...
