Yesterday I recieved a very suspicious web-based pop-up saying my computer was infected with about 20 Trojans, and to download (insert random bogus file here) to get rid of them.  AVG obviously turned up 0 Trojans on subsequent scans and so far nothing else out of the ordinary has happened, so I think I can confirm there might be scareware on my computer.

What would be best for getting rid of it?

Try Spybot, Ad-Aware or Malwarebytes.

See what they come up with.

Be sure to read everything and look at everything closely on the net. Things like that will trick you into installing or even opening a link that will cause damage to your system. The keen eye is always your computer's first line of defense. Wink

my personal opinion is, it was just a popup from a site that you went to, saying that there were 20 trojans on your computer HOPEING that you were going to be the idiot and install the REAL trojan that would clear up your harddrive (of the files that you are trying to protect).

When in doubt, run a virus scan.

I personally have Norton's Antivirus / Internet Security.  I can run it like an Antivirus program, which i have it set up to do a full system scan EVERY night at 3am while i am sleeping. But with IE8, it monitors EVERY webpage that I try to open and it will not allow me to open webpages that it thinks / or does find a virus attached to the page (popup).  So I am doublely secure.  Not to mention, I am hiding behind 3 Firewalls from the roaming Hacker (if they really want in, I am sure they can get in, but you have to go through 3 Firewalls, plus some other security software as well.  hehehe  Wink Cool
