Keeping in mind that I'm a strictly FS9 person, should I stay single core CPU or move on to a dual core.  Changes are necessary 'cause the rig I'm using (HP microtower) precludes a PSU upgrade which, in turn, precludes a video card upgrade - you get the idea.  Any advice, before I shell out the dough, will be gratefully received.

olderndirt,

Hum...............

My thoughts....which are not coming from a PC hardware guy at all..... are that while fs9 does not truly support multicore, if you are running a lot of other stuff in the background that you can move to the second coere, that might speed up the sim which you keep on the first core.

If that is true (I am still using a PC with hyperthreading only) then I'd be looking for maybe the fastest clocked dual core you can find... since the sim will only be using a single core of the pair.  Likely going quad core will not buy you anything much unless you are running a lot of other stuff too (like for a simpit).

You'll get your best and most accurate advice on this subject down in the "Hardware" section of the SimV forums... so I am going to move this down there.  Hopefully someone like NickN will see it and comment.

best,

Appreciate your reply.  Most of the upgrade advice I see here is aimed at FSX and that's understandable.  The younger members are mainly interested in state of the art and, were I their age again, me too.  FS9 satisfies my sim requirements but what I'm using to run it isn't getting the job done.  There are very few single core CPU's left out there, hence my question about a dual and even they'll probably be old hat before long.

Hey olderndirt,

I would imagine that, if you're going to stick to FS9, these should do just fine:

CPU

Graphics card:

and at least 2gb of RAM

For your power supply, I believe 600w should do the job just fine
