I have a brand new pc...here are the specs.
intel core i7-975 @ 3.33ghz w/ auto boost and HT enabled
corsair 6gb-ddr3 @ 1600mhz
nvidia geforce gtx 285 superpipe edition by MSI
western digital 1tb HD
antec 902 case< keeps things extremely cool and dust-free Smiley
however.....crap! performance in fsx, I took it back to my pc repair shop who built it for me....oh, it's fine they said...fsx is just a horribly coded game< it is but still!
example: over jfk, fog, or clear...frames fluctuate from 10-30.....very skippy,inconsistent.....IN DEFAULT AIRCRAFT!!!!! not even like i'm in a pmdg 747 or something! I really need someone to help! this pc was built for fsx. I'm a student pilot and I do get good practice off of this machine but the inconsistent frames are nothing like i've heard people talk about when they have an i7. the pc repair shop didn't notice anything wrong but even my other games like arma 2 are not up to par for having the acclaimed "FASTEST" processor in the gaming community. HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Sad

You need to read this:
http://www.simviation.com/cgi-bin/yabb2/YaBB.pl?num=1208959973

Follow the instructions and you'll notice a vast improvement.

Most simmers here will verify this. Wink

What motherboard? I never use any of those auto overclocking features, I get better performance and a more stable system with a manual overclock.

How's your power supply?  You need at least 750 watts continuous rated PSU to run that rig.  How about the motherboard, what kind is it?  Are you running a 64bit OS?  You need that if this is an FSX machine.

If your MB is good then you have what you need in HW to get great results in FSX.  But there's a lot more than just the HW.  By the way, the i7 cpus are not game killers, they are scientific/technical data-processing monsters and that's different than running a game.  They are pretty much on par with the core2's for your standard games BUT...FSX is different so we get the goodies.

Also 30 fps around JFK especially in heavy weather is not bad, even for the 975.  But it should be smooth, jerk-free and crystal clear graphics with you rig.

So there's the tuning.  Have you followed Nick's OS set-up and FSX tuning thread here at simviation EXACTLY as written?  that should be the next thing to consider once you have the HW set up and running.  Is it a fresh OS install?  Was FSX installed correctly (see the tuning thread)?

Finally, you should be overclocking that chip to 4.0Ghz...that's childs-play for the 975 provided you have an adequate cooler (not intel stock).  Just raise that multiplier to 30.  You might even get there on stock volts, but I bet you get there on less than 1.300v.  That'll help things significantly but you STILL have to be properly installed & tuned.

Regards,

Jim

Edit:  Mods-thank you.  Now that's really weird, I've never had that happen before.

Hi,

I think if you follow Nick's advice EXACTLY! you will find that HT should be OFF, etc.

I have a i7 920@3.99(C0 stepping- bought when i7 was quite new), 3Gb Mushkin 1600 7-8-7-20@1523, EVGA 260, 80Gb VRap for FSX, 150Gb Vrap for OS(XP64), FSX set at 75% Scenery/75% autogen(I do use the max tree line in the config on this system with no apparent problem as yet). All my tuning was done EXACTLY as suggested and I use 185 drivers with NHancer.

I think you will be able to get this if you just follow the doc's suggestions. His expertise doesn't just improve performance slightly!

Jack S.
Smiley

Update: My use of the max tree line in the conf file is NOT recomended; I've spent a lot of hours 'thinking out of the box' as Nick has suggested tuning this puppy and like what I have now.

Make it easy on yourself and follow the guide Nick wrote that 95% of us have used to get the right performance out of FSX...

After you've followed the guide EXACTLY as it is without trying to get smart and adding anything yourself, use this to tune FSX correctly:

http://www.simforums.com/forums/forum_posts.asp?TID=29041&PN=1

Please, do not use any of the tweaks posted by 'Nogod888GRCH'. It will NOT help FSX look better, it will only take away in its quality. The fsx.cfg tweaks he posted have been outdated since SP2/Acceleration and don't even do anything when added to the fsx.cfg. Also, using replacement files/textures will take away quality and will create other problems, which we have had to deal with here before.

I'm on an i7 system as well and the only tweaks I have had to add to the fsx.cfg (AFTER APPLYING NICK'S GUIDE TO THE COMPUTER!) are the following:

TERRAIN_MAX_AUTOGEN_TREES_PER_CELL=2100

TERRAIN_MAX_AUTOGEN_BUILDINGS_PER_CELL=1400

Place those two in the [TERRAIN] section of your fsx.cfg and set your autogen density slider in the FSX settings to VERY DENSE. Everything else should be set according to the link I gave you above.

DONT DO THIS.
Setting the FPS to unlimited it will only create problems.
After all your eyes will not see more than 18 to 24.Movies have 24 fps, and this will avoid problems with blurries and autogen. No matter what FS you use.

You really need that AG tweek? I tried it to see the effect and found with that tweek and a slider setting at very dense that the amount of AG was less than a slider setting of dense with no tweek. Nick also suggests not to use that tweek as it throws off the priority of the sim.

Hey jwenham!

The reason I use that tweak is because I don't like having to change autogen sliders while in flight. I can fly over Seattle at VERY DENSE with no tweak, and it will run just fine, but as soon as I get to the forested area with all those trees, I have to switch down to DENSE and wait for it to load... then switch back to VERY DENSE and wait for the load when I'm out of such areas... I find setting the tweak and leaving it at VERY DENSE anywhere in the world lets me fly with a fairly nice amount of autogen (especially buildings!) without having to switch the slider at any time Wink

Nick is right in that it throws the priority system off track. I sense almost an undetectable difference in smoothness with the tweak on... but still no stutters at all so it's perfectly fine Smiley

Hi Andy! Yea I know exactly what your talking about with the trees and it bugs me as it does you. The issue that has been bothering me lately is with AI. Im tired of switching the settings everytime depending on my location. ( I use UT2) Ive just decided to leave it at 20% and so be it and not worry if a landing will suffer for having AI too high.

Jim,

I'm glad to know I'm not the only one bugged by that issue! For the looks, I much rather leave the tweak out of the fsx.cfg. This leaves many more trees in the terrain and looks much better, especially in places such as Seattle Wink

I don't know. I go back and forth between using it and taking it off.  Roll Eyes

As for the AI, I use World of AI and leave it at 59% anywhere in the world. You seriously can't even tell the difference in performance between NO traffic and at 59%. The models are very good and they have almost 600 airline packages. Yes, I did have to painfully download and install each of them, but it's worth it in the end. Their models look much better than any payware traffic addon IMHO. Wink
