(This Is What Happens When I have To Much Time On My Hands)  Embarrassed

I Have read in a few places that the F-105 is the largest single seat aircraft?

However Im not quite sure, I dont know what dimentions they were using.

Becuase I think that they are a few aircraft that are larger.

Most of these dimetions are from "Janes Aircraft Books" to try keep it consitant and correct, but of course they will alter from source to source...

e.g.

F-105 TC:                 Length.19.61m            Wingspan.10.59m      Height.5.97m

Mig 25 "Foxbat" :      Length.23.82m            Wingspan.14.02m      Height.6.10m
Mig 27 "Flogger":      Length.17.08m            Wingspan.13.97m      Height.5.00m
F-102 DD :            Length.20.84m            Wingspan.11.62m      Height.6.46m
F-106 DD:                    Length.21.55m            Wingspan.11.61m      Height.6.18m
U2:                          Length.19.20m            Wingspan.31.40m      Height.4.80m
F15A Egale:            Length.19.45m            Wingspan.13.05m      Height.5.68m
VAGF:                  Length.13.44m            Wingspan.34.75m      Height.4.05m

Mistel Ju88/Fw190:      Length.15.50m            Wingspan.20.08m      Height.7.42m   <--------------------------- (Does this count???, the Fw/Bf couldn't land back with the Ju88)

So I thought if you multiply the 3 dimetions with each other to get the volume of the cubiod that the aircraft would displace e.g. smallest square hanger it could fit in...
F-105 TC:            Volume.1239.79m^3
Mig 25 "Foxbat" :      Volume.2037.13m^3
Mig 27 "Flogger":        Volume.1193.04m^3
F-102 DD :            Volume.1564.36m^3
F-106 DD:            Volume.1546.21m^3
U2:                  Volume.2893.82m^3
F15A Egale:            Volume.1441.71m^3
VAGF:                  Volume.1891.51m^3
Mistel Ju88/Fw190:      Volume.2392.21m^3

Im pretty sure there are some other large single seat aircraft I have not thought of. Smiley

But from this the order from Largest to Smallest (using this volume method):

1. U2
2. Mistel Ju88/Fw190
3. Mig 25 "Foxbat"
4. VAGF (Virgin Atlantic Global Flyer)
5. F-102 DD
6. F-102 DD
7. F15A
8. F-105 TC
9. Mig 27 "Flogger"

Feel free to comment, and check the maths I may have mad a mistake or typo etc... Undecided

If you can think of any more single seat aircraft that are larger than these, or anyway of judging this better please say so  Cheesy

I think weight would actually be a better indicator. While the U2 may take a larger hanger to fit in, could you really say it was "bigger" than a, say, MiG 25.

Yeah thats what im trying to get at, its a bit grey.
There is like no method of deciding what is larger

I think the ATA in the UK performed single pilot (and no one else) ops in some quite large aeroplanes during the war. Smiley

I think your volume idea would work, but you need to get more specific with it.

Don't use a single big box for figuring the total volume, break each plane into components (fuselage, wings, elevators, tail).

Find the volume of each component, and then add them together, that way you wind up with a much more accurate number that includes no empty space, thus allowing you to compare the volume of each plane to see which is larger.

Yeah I was thinking of trying to do that but it became difficult to acquire that data etc...

But from these figures I think you can tell that the F-105 is not the largest single seat aircraft.

I wouldn't call a Lancaster or any other ww2 multi engine bomber a single seat aircaft but it is a fair point  Smiley

I've been next to all of these planes with the exception of the Su-27, and I can say that the 105 is a monster in person. Much larger than a U-2 as far as overall mass, the U-2 is flat and spread out, giving it such a large number in your chart.

I've heard that the Su-27(and relatives) is the largest single seat fighter ever made.  Wink

I think that talking about mass with this subject is missing the point. When the vast majority of people talk about "the largest" they are talking about physical size. The way this thread is going is along the lines of what is bigger a football or a golf ball made of lead. The golf ball is bigger on the grounds it weighs more.
