not sure what forum to put this in so please move it mods if its in the wrong one!

well, today, my computer had a catostrophic failure and ive lost all major use of it  Sad . Im typing this from my parents computer.

basically, i was playing round with a bluetooth dongle and all of a sudden all my usb ports failed, then the computer died. I managed to get it up and working again, heavily crippled, but still no USB ports, no proper boot, and it takes a bit of coaxing to get windows to start, let alone run normally. im currently backing up my important files along with FSX onto a spare hard drive, but its like its had a mojor stroke! theres no signs of a virus (im a comp programmer so im not exactly computer illiterate!) and i cant find any evidence of a hardware failuer, but windowsXP is now saying that due to "significant hardware changes" i need to re-register Windows with a new serial number!!!

its giving me 3 days before  Shocked...

So i'd like to ask:

Has anyone had anything like this hapen to them? if so, what was the problem and how was it fixed,

if i re-install windowsXP, will FSX still run as it is? (its currently on a different drive from the boot drive)

If it wont run, and i have to do a complete re-install of fsx, will i still be able to activate like normal even though the serial number of the OP system has changed and FSX has already been activated on the old OP.

at very worst, and a re-install is needed on both the OP and fsx, with all my addons such as payware aircraft, scenery, WOAI still work if i can simply back-up the correct folders while i still can, and simply paste them into the 'new FSX'? will they work or will i have to go through all the installations again, re-regersting all my addons?

anyways what i want to say is you wont be seeing any more screenshots from me for a while! (unless a miracle happens) luckilly i have already made most of my H2H shots.
thanks for any help  in advance!

and finally, one last word...

Back up is the name of the game, I am not giving you advice, but answering your question. This happened to me 4 months ago, so I just picked up a new hard drive and went through the painfull process of format and reinstall the things I actually use. A pain in the neck, but now my PC is running really good! Rising from the ashes, may be one way to put it!

cheers for the optimism... i dont mind too much if it is just a software problem, as i can re-install, but if it is hardware then im done for! and i cant tell what it is!!! thats the most anoying thing

cheers for the reply

Hi, I run a PC support company. Can you confirm that it says reregister with a new serial no? Sounds most odd to me. It will ask you to reactivate if you make 'significant hardware changes', and if your copy of Windows is genuine, it should be just fine. If you have the appropriate install CD, you should be able to do a repair install of Windows and all your settings should be intact - and all your data. What confuses me is what caused this in the first place...I would not expect installing Bluetooth to trigger reactivation. Try a repair install.

Sorry to hear that. The same thing happened to me in Spring. I spend hours re-installing all the add ons again.

Deano  Sad

wow yeah thats bad news indeed Sad sounds like it could be a number of things from how you described it. if it were me, i'd start with checking the motherboard (especially since you said the USB ports went out first). you COULD try to unplug your power supply and hit the power button on the comp a few times and let it sit for a few minutes, this will let the motherboard empty out its capacitors and it'll "reboot" when you plug everything back in. I've heard of this fixing some USB issues before, who knows if it'd help in your case. it wouldn't hurt to check your memory too (take 1 stick out at a time to see if things stabilize) but i'm leaning more towards the mobo being damaged Sad

i'm pretty sure you won't be able to use your copy of FSX on the other drive since all of your FSX registry data will be gone.  your new copy of Windows won't recognize the program on a different drive without having gone through the installation process.

dunno what to tell ya about moving your payware files since i don't own any payware....if you end up reinstalling windows from scratch, it'd be nice and clean if ya just reinstalled the payware stuffs too.

well, thats my 2 cents anyhow.....good luck with that project! comp issues are a pain in the butt, but sometimes fun to figure out and repair.
