I was born in Atlanta in 1949.
My name was changed in 1979, 1986, and 2008.
I have flown DC-3s, Martin 404s, Fairchild Metro IIs,
DC-9s, Boeing 727s, Douglas MD-82s, Boeing 757s,
Convair CV-580s, Boeing 787s, Boeing 747s, Airbus A330s,
Airbus A320s, and Airbus A319s.
Who am I and what event happened in late 1972?

I have more clues, but I learned from Barb to dole them out sparingly. Smiley

Billy Joel & Ric Flair were born in Atlanta in 1949. Cheesy  Wink

You are Southern Airways

Southern Airways from 1949-1979
Republic Airlines 1979-1986
Northwest Airlines 1986-2008
Delta Airlines 2008-present,

Aside from the Soccer Team crash in the Andes (which was a different airline altogether) , I can find nothing significant about this particular airline from 1972.

Darn! I never thought you guys would get it that quick. Guess I need to get some more tutoring from Barb.  Smiley

Two points for Shane, you got the first half.

Excellent Chris. I'll have to find something a lot harder for you.  Grin

November 10, 1972
Three men successfully hijack a Southern Airways DC-9 from Birmingham to multiple locations in the United States and one Canadian city and finally to Cuba with $2 million (actual cash, Presidential "grant" totalled $10 million) and 10 parachutes. Co-pilot Harold is wounded; they threaten to crash the plane into one of the Oak Ridge nuclear installations; at McCoy Air Force Base, Orlando, the FBI shoots out the tires; they force pilot William Haas to take off; the plane finally lands on a (partially) foam-covered runway in Havana; two are sentenced in Cuba to 20 years, one to 15 years [9], then returned to the United States to face further charges. This incident leads to a brief treaty between the U.S. and Cuba to extradite hijackers, not renewed. Haas's story commemorated in the Reader's Digest book People in Peril.

Flight 49 originated in Memphis, but was hijacked in Birmingham. The hijackers made Capt. Haas fly them to Jackson, Ms, Detroit, Cleveland, Toronto, Knoxville, Lexington, Chattanooga, Havana, Orlando, and back to Havana.

A book was written by Ed Blair, with Capt. Haas' assistance, titled "Odyssey of Terror", published in 1977.  My Dad knew Capt. Haas and was friends with his son. I found a thank you card in my Dad's copy of the book. It was from Capt. Haas' wife thanking my parents for their sentiments when Capt. Haas died.

My Dad started with Southern in Baton Rouge in 1949 and was promoted to Station Manager of Laurel in 1951. He retired from Republic and until his death, drew retirement from Northwest, though he never actually worked a day for them. Now it's Delta.

I thought it was an interesting part of aviation history and worth using for this post. Good job guys.

Well, this was way hard enough for me. I even tried to cheat with Google, but couldn't come up with anything.

Of course, there's no stopping the real aviation people here  Smiley
