Without going back and looking, I think that I remember disabling automatic Windows updates when I used NickN's guide to set-up XP. Today I got a message from NOD32 that my system was out of date.

I went to manually update and when I click "check for updates" I immediately get an error saying "Windows Update Error the page cannot be displayed."

I have always just allowed Windows update to get the updates automatically. How do I make this work again?

that's where I am going to update. I go to the Windows Update website and it says "click to see updates". When I click, I get the error.

hmmmm....

I have seen this happen with malware .. I suggest you download, install and update MalwareBytes.. run the full test and let it kill anything it finds

You may need to reset IE to DEFAULT after too

TOOLS - INTERNET OPTIONS - ADVANCED tab..   click the button for  RESET INTERNET EXPLORER SETTINGS ..

Then click APPLY,,  close and reopen IE.. and then go to Windows Update and try again

If you made changes to IE in the past you will need to set those back up
