I have my desktop icons positioned where I want them in specific groups. Since updating to the 185.85 driver, ALMOST every time I change views to a different folder, etc - when the desktop comes back, all the icons are in a line on the left side of the screen. None of the position options are checked. It's an easy matter to restore it but wondered if anyone has run into the same issue.
It gets really annoying.

Vic

EDIT: After further testing - it seems that whenever the screen REFRESHES - all the icons move.

Vic,

As an aside, I now use the 186.06 beta for XP64 (did use 182.05).

For the first time I can set bufferpools=1000000 (I don't see much difference) and at times AG=100%, SD=100%, frames locked@30, all of Nick's 'tunes'.

Add-On: UT2, UTX USA, SceneryTech US, REX(waves only), FEX.

System: 17 920@3.99(190x21)/1600 Mushkin 7-8-7-20@1520/260 EVGA standard video card/ ASUS P6T Deluxe ver 2/ 1602 BIOS.

I never recomend a driver change but thought I'd share my experience with the new ones; these I will keep.

EDIT: BP=100000000 and actually tried 150000000 and unlimited but very choppy. Locked 30 is the sweet spot evidently for this system.

Vista 64, 8800 GTS and 185.85 here - and no grafical problemos.

Edit:

Not all problems are driver related.
Yesterday I cleaned my XFX 8800 GTS and earned 2° C less idle/load  running @720/1800/1010
I bet a computer is much more complex I thought so. Smiley

Wanted to try the new Nhancer so I upped the driver. I'll check out the beta and see if the problem persists. Itg's more annoying than anything else.

Interesting - IIRC ( not at my FSX system right now) I have BP set to 400000000 on my Q9650 @3.88 with GTX280 video card and it's smooth as silk. Also using the Frame Limiter at 30fps

I have recently installed the driver and have no problems. However I have experienced that problem before and it occurred 5-6 times and then stopped.

You may have to roll back to your old driver, sometimes upgrading is not the best move.

Agreed. I'll play around a bit and drop back if I need to. Just wondered if anyone else had run into this behavior.

well now that's a revolting development!  Sad

Rolling back the driver had no effect! And for some reason System Restore won't work either. I could try safemode commandline restore.

Gotta be some dumb obscure registry setting.  Angry

EDIT:
Well don't understand the how and why of it but I resolved the issue.

First, I tried various suggestions, system restore, registry hacks - all with no results.

Then I got to thinking - I use a program called icon_restore which basically saves your desktop layout and restores it whenever there's a change. My problem was that whenever the screen reset, all the icons moved to left columns. My settings were NOT being saved by XP.

Then in occurred to me that possible icon_restore moved the icons back in place but did it in a way that did NOT trigger a change in XP so the layout was not being saved by XP.

So I rebooted and when the icons came up in the left column, I dragged one icon to the middle of the screen and dropped it there. Then used icon_restore to restore the layout.

Right clicked and selected reset - voila! - no change.

I'm guessing that the movement of the icon triggered something in XP that made it save the new layout.

IAC, problem resolved.  Cheesy

FWIW, ignoring this problem, the 185.85 driver was not good for me - corrupted displays in FSX - rolled back to the 180.48 and all is well.

Glad you sorted that, good investigative effort on your part.

As far as System Restore goes there is a way to get it back, best bet is to do a net search and see if you get a result from what's offered as a solution. I reinstalled XP completely and watch very carefully what I put in for updates as I'm sure that somewhere in those updates is a nice System Restore block---I'd hate think it may have been a move to push people to upgrade to another OS Roll Eyes

I have also rolled back the driver as I was having a conflict seemingly with water textures causing a total lock, reboot required. Not nice.

I too do not know the why or wherefor of all this but I am convinced that what works for one does not necessarily work for another, even running the same specs.

You have a result,excellent.

Col.
