Fozzer: Those oil platforms you mention are taboo to most who live here. They are currently idle and are used to grow commercial mussels  now.  I think you mentioned that you've also flown to the channel islands here? I use the Guersney field to practice bad weather landings. I am puzzled by what seems to be a waterfall coming out of a cliff on the island. Is that a landmark, would you know?  Of course, the Brits had channel islands before we did so we yanks ought to call them "New Channel Islands" a la "New York" or "New London".

Denis...

Just to get you started in FS 2004 scenery...>>>

http://www.blueskyscenery.com/download.html

http://walhalla.mine.nu/fs2004/us.html

Lots of "stuff" in the Sim V, Flightsim, (Avsim), etc, Libraries... Smiley...!

I tried, and deleted the "Photo Scenery" for the "Channel Islands"....my add-on mesh is more realistic and more suitable for landings!*

I often take off from Santa Barbara, on the Mainland, and visit the Channel Island Chain.

"Waterfalls" are often glitches in the Scenery Mesh, often caused by add-on Scenery Mesh conflicting with the default Scenery Mesh, or modifications to the Scenery entries in the FS9.cfg File: The blue Sea/Lakes appearing up the side of the Cliffs!

Variations in Airfield/Airstrip scenery altitude is often caused by using add-on Mesh..Wink...!

...so have a look around for loads of nice Scenery Files, etc, for FS 2004....which then becomes "as real as it gets!", and compares very favourably with FSX, (when all the FS 2004 Sliders are moved up to "Max), without the associated Hardware, etc, problems... Kiss...!

Paul...G-BPLF...FS 2004...getting "enmeshed" in FS9!... Wink...!

* ...P.S. ...I avoid "Photographic Scenery" like the plague...OK for high flying Jumbo Jets....hopeless for low and slow fliers hopping, from one strip to the next...Wink...!

Fozz: Thanks for the links and the interesting stuff on scenery generally. One thing I've noticed re flight sim products, the manufacturers are not very good on directions or information on using their products.  Saitek is a good example. As I mentioned, I bought "Ground Environment" in DVD and had no problem installing it. But they don't tell new boys like me how to use it. I haven't seen a very big change in the default scenery of 2004 since I installed and now am wondering  if I have to install it every time I use 2004. I look around the internet and see screen shots of GE and I'll be damned if it looks like the one I have!  LOL That's why I so appreciate this site. Wonderful resource and very knowledgeable, patient  and helpful  people!!!

Hello DenisH, and welcome to the relatively problem free world of FS9. Grin Wink

I also have GEP, and I must say that it made the most dramatic change to my sim.

When you installed, the GUI should have ran automatically allowing you to select which textures for day & night you wanted to install.  If you never did this step, then it has not been completely installed. Wink

I have my FS9 looking about as close to FSX as I think it can get, ( at least until REX for FS9 comes out. Smiley ) And most of it is because of GEP. Cool

Good luck, and any help you need, we're always here. Smiley

...don't forget, Den...

Assuming your Hardware is up to the task, with your add-ons fully installed, move ALL your sliders up to the MAX settings in Options: "Scenery, Aircraft, Weather, and Hardware" to fully appreciate all the benefits of FS 2004... Wink...!

Adding bits and bobs, over time, (mostly Freeware), like Shane says, FS 2004 will equal FSX on your existing Hardware... Smiley...!

Paul....G-BPLF...FS 2004...Enjoy!

P.S....not being too enthusiastic about "Turquoise" coloured water, I keep my "Water Effects" slider to "None", use "Land only",  and use Flight Water Pro and VOZ water effects to fill the void...Wink...!

Shane: You may have given me the solution. I will rerun the CDRom of GE and look for those textures.  Are these the day, night, golf course and industrial buttons?  If so, I have downloaded them. Maybe (probably) I missed something else on the first run.  I assume a rerun won't do any damage to the program?  Or will it? Can you advise?

Foz: I have a pretty good Dell and will follow your advice. If it's too much for my system I'll apprpriately slide back the controls.  Thanks to you both!

Those are indeed the textures I was referring to.

The best way to tell if they are installed, is during the loading splash screen, it will say which set is installed. Unless of course you have added something else that has modified the splash screen, such as VOZ. Smiley

And yes, slider position will have a big impact on the appearance of the textures, as will hardware quality. Wink

Thanks for the quick response. One thing, I never get a message regarding  Ground Environment when FS9 simulator  is loading. I have an FG icon on my tabletop which is why I wondered earlier if I have to download FG everytime I use FS9? I've tried this but no improvement. Am I confusing you?  lol   I haven't added on any scenery other than the FG download. Should I download FG CD again?  Will it damage anything if I do?  you advise?  Sorry for being so ignorant about this. All very new to me.

Just to make sure, you are using Ground Environment Professional, correct? Or are you talking about a different program, because I don't have a 'FG' icon on my desktop. Undecided

If it is GEP:
Just run the icon on your desktop, and select the texture sets you want for each option and then select install. Then at the bottom of your splash screen (the one with the DC-3 that says Flight Simulator 2004 ) you should see, in white letters, the name of the texture set installed.

If not, then it depends on what program you have. Wink

Shane: I apologize, I just went on GE using desktop icon and when I checked to install the "industrial" texture there was indeed a message window. It said:  "There is an errordetecting a required texture folder in Flight Simulator. It could be an add-on product that does not exist in Flight imulator. Please check the selected Ground Environment texture oiptions and verify any installed add-ons".  The three other GE textures showed no error.

That's the message. Of course, this is Greek to me since I haven't added on any scenery other than GE. I have downloaded a few aircraft. I haven't any idea how to verify installed add-ons.  Does this message make sense to you?

The box containing my GE CD-Rom says it is "Ground Environment for FS 2004". No mention of "professiional". It's by Flight 1 software

Mine's the same.  Looks like if the file path (5) for the installation selections is what you want, then you install, exit and they're there.  Must admit to being a little underwhelmed with the result but, then again, payware is not always as good as the pictures on the box.

OLDER: Glad to hear I am not going mad. This FS thing is overwhelming, not so much in learning  landings, nav, radio, flight performances, coping with eather, etc etc.  but in the computer itself. Guys my age didn't grow up with computers. We don't know the language. Hell, when I was in the Navy we were still firing 40's and 20's at airplanes by squinting through gunsights. LOL I didn't realize  one needed so much computer knowledge to participate in FS. For instance, I haven't the vagueist idea of what "splash" is. The mysteries of downloading continue to elude me. My airplane folder ended up in another program called Photo Imprssions 6 and I don't know  how it got there or how to get it out.  Very, very frustrating. I'm ready to abandon it even though I just sprung for pedals and yoke, which I'll reluctantly hand over to one of my kids. Despite my frustration, I remain  grateful to all you guys who  have shown so much patience in explaining  its mysteries.

You're preaching to the choir when discussing the vagaries of computering.  For many years, for me, they were just a necessary evil but, when I fell for FS9, it dawned on me I'd better get up to some level of proficiency.  Fortunately my wife is quite literate so she's been able to provide drift corrections as needed.  For the Sim, almost everything I know was learned right here.  At first, it was like reading hieroglyphics backwards but, slowly, things started to make sense and the more you downloaded and installed, or played with files, the more your success rate improved.  It's like learning any new skill.  At first you're all knuckles and elbows then something clicks and you wonder what all the fuss was about  Smiley.  And I think "splash" is the amount of water you put in good whiskey.

I try to view my computer as sort of an extension of my mind/memory. It remembers & stores things so that I don't have to. Wink

As for how your airplane folder got into a photo program folder, Internet browsers will remember the last place you put something when you downloaded it, and then automatically put the next thing you download there also, I'm pretty sure this is a default setting. This is opposed to having it ask you where to put each thing you download (which is the preferred method for me.  Wink ) Just grab it and drag it out of there to move it.  Wink

The 'splash' screen is the very first screen you see when you start FS9, and the screen you see when you click 'Fly Now'. It has pics of a DC3, a 747, & the Wright flyer, and says Flight Simulator 2004. Smiley

i hate to break in on the Ground Environment Pro talk, but I just wanted to say that *I* have the Real Environment Pro (FS9) { REX is for FSX only.... hence the X. } Water Textures are now amazing compared to what they use to be, runways are more realistic, and concrete surface areas - ramps/tarmac, now have the grid lines like they were poured in place.

not to mention the clouds, sun, night sky, lighting, weather in general is now .... WOW!  Shocked Shocked

Here is just a taste of the weather and feeling of REP. (real environment pro)
